The charismatic actor playing Macbeth offers himself as a lover, if only she would be his stage wife. The spirit of the witch she is playing appears to insist on this. But stepping into the shoes of Shakespeare's most infamous female involves harming the beautiful, incompetent actress who has been miscast in the role. Accidents happen to those around her, but Nairne feels the curse of The Scottish Play has singled her out, leaving its footprints in the sand, riding along in her car. Whispering temptations. Will Nairne emulate Lady Macbeth by allowing ambition to ensnare her? The rewards seem almost worth the risk: an improved career, a breathtaking love affair. Can she resist? Or will she forfeit her integrity, perhaps even kill, in order to play the better part?

The Better Part is Deborah Gregory's second novel. Her first, The Cornflake House, was published by Picador. As always, Deborah's characters are beautifully drawn and constantly interesting. The story unfolds in the real world, but the paranormal is chillingly and believably present. At times laugh-aloud funny, at times sad, and occasionally frightening, this is a book to savour.

I can't recommend this book highly enough! The subtle interweaving of the two stories (modern Nairne and her 16th century haunter Mary) draws you in without you noticing, until you can't put this book down.The characters are utterly believable to a man, allowing the book to oscillate smoothly between terrifying and humourous (I particularly liked the bit with the gnome). If you like books from first class writers, read this
