Product Description

Mona Berman has it all—a twenty-year marriage, a successful career as a romance novelist, and three teenage daughters. But when her husband, Brian, leaves her for someone younger, thinner, blonde, and French, she has to step back and take a good, long look at her life.

First, her career. She can’t continue to write about “Happily Ever After,” so she changes the heroine of her new book from a hot young thing to a forty-something woman who manages to find happiness without a man. Her agent isn’t too happy—the heroine is how old? She doesn’t get the guy in the end? How is that even possible?

But Mona is tough, and she’s got Anthony, her personal assistant, and a few good friends to cheer her on and keep the stiff martinis flowing. And Ben. Ben is her plumber, but not your average plumber. He’s smart enough to know that Brian was never good enough for her, and sexy enough to be cast as the romantic lead in quite a few of her books. The sound of his voice alone can send her imagination into full romantic overdrive.

Then she meets Mitch, who might be just the guy for her. And there’s still Ben, who’s managed to come to her rescue more than once. But—there’s a book to publish, a soon-to-be-ex-husband to deal with, and what has Aunt Lily done this time?

Can Mona work this all out? Can life imitate art, and can Mona write her own happy ending?

About the Author

Dee Ernst was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Morristown. She attended Marshall University, where she majored in journalism. Several years, career changes, and a few daughters later, she was listening to the Joan Hamburg Show, where a guest made the suggestion that if you want to be happy, you should go back to what you were doing when you were ten and try to make it a career. Since Dee was writing stories when she was ten, she decided to give writing another go. After three novels and many rejection letters, she self-published Better Off Without Him. Her next book, A Different Kind of Forever, was released in April of 2012. In the spring of 2013, she signed with Montlake Publishing, which re-released Better Off Without Him and launched her third title, A Slight Change of Plan, that fall. Though Dee finds a lot in common with all her heroines, she is happily married and living in New Jersey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL FEEL GOOD READ 23 May 2012
By Carol 'avid little bookworm' TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well what can I say? A storyline which would be devastating for any main character is turned into a real feel good read, which had wit screaming out from almost every page. I absolutely loved it from the minute I started this novel until I finished it only a couple of days later and I'm now going through the phase of missing these wonderful characters.

Dee Ernst played to my own sense of humour throughout this book - just a small sample of examples which kept me hooked and chucking:

Of Brian, Mona's dead loss of a (deserting) husband who is an accountant - `he doesn't do much debiting and crediting himself'

Of Lana, Mona's diva cat - `she makes a point to rumba her way from the sink to the fridge'

Mona's brilliant Aunt Lily says of Brian, who has contributed nothing other than money to their marriage - `I mean, the man couldn't arrange for a tube going up his own ass'!

Of Fred, Mona's dog who is at last allowed to sleep on the bed after Brian packs his bags and leaves - `As a sleeping companion, Fred was commendable. He didn't snore. His legs didn't twitch. When I snored, he didn't shake me on the shoulder and insist I turn over on my side. He didn't steal the covers or get up three or four times to pee. He didn't fart and stayed on his side of the bed.' Just brilliant, this woman has the gift of seeing the optimistic side of any eventuality!!

This book is written as told by Mona, but there are also a whole raft of other superb characters that are weaved throughout this novel with great ease, which to my mind can only be achieved by a good writer.

There's a good synopsis and other good reviews so the only other thing I'll say is buy it, I loved the ending - highly recommended if you want a witty romantic comedy.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice light love comedy 5 Dec 2013
By NH
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's great light hearted reading in between big books. I was a tad disappointed Ben wasn't appeared to look like head over the heal love stricken puppy though. But good enough happy end for Mona. I really enjoyed those funny and witty conversations of Mona and her friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Off Without Him 12 July 2012
By BigAl
Format:Kindle Edition
Better Off Without Him is one of the funniest chick-lit books I've read in recent memory. Ernst starts with a great cast of characters: the protagonist, Mona, is a strong woman with a great talent for recognizing the humor in life, even in negative experiences. She has to be, with her three teenage daughters, each with unique personalities that keep Mona guessing and with the typical teen problems of being on the cusp of adulthood (with some very adult like insights), yet still needing parental direction. Mona's friends each have their own quirks that spice up the story as they provide Mona support.

As Mona works through her own issues with her soon-to-be-ex and eases into life as an unattached woman, she changes her next book from Romance to something else, which turns out to be a book that mirrors and foreshadows many of her own experiences. Despite docking a star for many minor, but too pervasive proofing problems, I would still highly recommend Better Off Without Him for fans of the genre who are able to ignore those issues.
