Book Description

3 Mar 2011
Many dog owners in the UK don't understand the dynamics of human/dog relationships and consequently experience problems with their pets, such as barking, aggression, chasing livestock, chewing, pulling and running away. Experienced dog trainer Debbie Connolly shows new and experienced dog owners alike how to deal with such behaviour problems, so that the dog can become a safe and happy member of their family. Debbie recounts real-life anecdotes to get across the serious point that you are playing with your dog's life, if you can't or won't learn to treat your dog appropriately. Some of the stories she tells are funny, some are sad, but all of them are easy for her readers to identify with and relate to. She explains how to get a dog from the right source and how to live with it afterwards. She gives practical advice on how to solve all the common problems dog owners face. And she isn't afraid to raise important issues that others avoid - issues that dog owners actually face in the real world, for example, when you should give up and put your dog to sleep.

Review

Debbie s direct and honest approach means she really gets her point across and with her knowledge and experience she is well worth listening too. Her advice on obtaining a dog is second to none and she clearly outlines the pitfalls that can lead the unsuspecting would-be owner to encourage puppy farming.

Salient points and guidelines are taken from the body of the script and neatly framed in bulleted lists. A clever idea, as once you have enjoyed reading the book, you can easily dip in again to find useful points of reference without difficulty.

Debbie s approach is not for the faint hearted and will appeal more to those in touch with their feminine side! It will definitely not be in the top ten reading list of the macho man who is looking for dog as a status symbol! But is he the right person to own a dog anyway!!??--London Dog Forum

Practical, no-nonsense advice from the trainer best known from the BBC series Dog Borstal, to help your dog become a safe, happy member of the family. --Dogs Today

This book is a 'must read' for all dog owners - it should be on everyone's book shelf! Funny, and informative! It had me swearing (mainly about puppy farming, and idiot owners), laughing and crying!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Dog Behaviour 8 Mar 2011
By Carrie
Format:Paperback
Although the author certainly doesn't suffer fools gladly and tells it as it is, I found her advice very helpful. It may be simple common sense but I'd never thought that when buying a dog I should get the seller to groom it in front of me or to walk it past traffic to see how it reacts. And her hard-hitting warnings about being conned by puppy farmers are absolutely spot on: if you buy a dog from one, you're not saving one dog's life but simply making more space for them to breed another one! Overall, I think the point behind her book is that we should all think about our relationships with our dogs and how our behaviour affects them. She admitted she hadn't always got it right which was refreshing to hear. I don't know whether she's got any letters after her name from learning about the theory of dog training but I certainly felt that she knew what she was talking about from her own practical experience, but I can understand that some people might not like her bluntness.
