Book Description

29 Sep 2009 House of Night Novels (Book 2)

It seems that (un)life is going pretty well for Zoey Redbird. She's settled in at the House of Night finishing school and is coming to terms with the vast powers the vampyre goddess, Nyx, has given her. She even has a boyfriend ... or two. Best of all, Zoey finally feels she has found somewhere she belongs. Then the unthinkable happens.

Human teenagers are being killed, and all the evidence points to the vampires at Zoey's school. While danger stalks the humans from Zoey's past life, she begins to realise that the very powers that made her so unique might also threaten those she loves. Then, when she needs her new friends the most, death strikes the House of Night. Zoey finds herself facing a betrayal that could break her heart and jeopardise the very fabric of her world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Betrayed by P.C. and Kristin Cast 4 Jan 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
I am writing this from my dad's account.

If only I could get four and a half stars, cos that is what I would rather give this, so it is rounded up. Anyway...

I read the first book in the House of Night series ("Marked" - really really good, five stars) after one of my friends recommended it to me, and after adoring it, decided to read the second, "Betrayed". I haven't read the Twilight series, so I can't compare this to it, but at first glance, I definitely prefer the House of Night - it seems a more original and imaginative take on the vampire genre.

It is set in America and about sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird and what she gets up to at a boarding school for fledgling vampires (vampires in training)after being Marked by the Tracker. (Being Marked is where are small crescent moon is permanently put on your forehead, and once you have finished the Change, the moon will be filled-in and be a sapphire colour and there will be intricate tattoos on your face, shoulders, back and front.) Zoey has been given special gifts by the vampire goddess, whom vampires worship, Nyx.
So, Zoey becomes leader of the Dark Daughters (a sort of club where rituals are held). And everything seems to be going OK until...

Someone (or something...creepy thought) starts killing human teenagers, and all evidence (or possible framing) leads to the House of Night and its residents, and two detectives seem to be particularly interested in Zoey...

On top of this, Zoey must grapple with the boyfriend issue. She is torn between...
1.) Heath her human "almost ex-boyfriend" who she has known since...well ages.
2.) Erik, a fledgling like Zoey, a very popular guy and "totally delicious.

2.0 out of 5 stars Betrayed - P.C.Cast and Kristin Cast 27 July 2009
Format:Paperback
The house of night series is about Zoey Redbird, she is a normal sixteen year old that is until she gets marked by a fledgling vampire and has to move to the House of Night school where she will have to take lessons in all things vampire for the next 5 years as she changes from a fledgling to a adult vampire. Zoey has always struggled to fit in and hopes that this will finally be her chance.

So the second book starts with the same gusto as the first, Zoey should be on top of the world after beating Aphrodite and taking over as leader of the dark daughters, but add a complicated love life, obsessive bloodlust, and the unexplained human murders (with all the evidence pointing to vampires and the house of night) and Zoey isn't having an easy time.
I have to be honest i struggled with this book, i really didn't like the third love interest, as if Heath (the human almost ex-boyfriend) and Eric (the fledgling) weren't enough they add Loren the poetry teacher. I thought it was a cheap shot, write in yet another guy so that the heroine can't decide, then add the Imprinting with Heath (which sounds very Twilight to me!) and i just found it a struggle to read.

The only thing that saved this book for me is the twist with Stevie Rae and the undead "vampires", but i could even see that one coming a mile away.
I have got the third book and i am really hoping that the Cast's get back on track, as this was a very poor following up to such a promising start to a new series.

I am a big twilight fan and thought i wouldn't enjoy this as much. At first it seemed strange but the book got realy good! I've read them all, they're amazing! I recommend anybody to buy this book. They're not very long but couldn't be any better. Perfect for teen girls to read, they're funny, romantic and thrilling.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't wait to finish 23 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Now, I hate those reviewers who just come online to slag off books but unfortunately I had to say something about this book. If you look at my past reviews you'll note that practically, if not all, have been positive so this is not a usual thing for me to do.

I was really excited to read Betrayed as I had really enjoyed the fluent writing skills of the mother-daughter team and liked the characters - especially Erik,(yum). This book starts off great, despite the fact that Erik isn't in it for like 200 pages. Despite the fact that he is supposed to be Zoey's boyfriend she doesn't seem to be that interested in maintaining it and hardly thinks about him at all, instead concentrating on two other guys in her life. When Loren came in, in addition to her human boyfriend, I wanted to throw the book down and stop reading. Unfortunately i'm one of those die-hard readers that feel compelled to finish a book.

There are many things in this book that didn't make sense to me, such as why the Casts have dipped to low standards in writing in one of the most increasingly popular plot devices - the other guy. A lot of books are doing this nowadays - writing in another guy so that the heroine can't decide which one to have. This infuriates me as it is such a cheap trick and I just hate it. That could have had a lot to do with why I couldn't wait to finish the book. Amazon.com reviewers, however, seem to agree with me. If you liked Marked you should probably read this book to judge for yourself for there seems to be an equal number of hates/loves.

I found this book to be a poor echo of the first book which I enjoyed so much and only gave it 2 stars as the writing style was still adequate.
