5.0 out of 5 stars The Revival of Survival Horror! 26 Oct. 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation3| Edition:Standard Edition|Verified Purchase
The Highly anticipated Survival Horror Game has arrived and it certainly delivers. To start off you play as Sebastian, a detective investigating a horrible manslaughter within a hospital, You are then knocked out and are dragged into the world of nightmares. Graphics are pretty good for PS3, they still give that nice dark, gritty and disturbing feeling within the atmosphere. In terms of gameplay it has a nice mix of stealth and combat, ammo is somewhat scarce so you will have to make the right choice in whether to fight back or run and hide so naturally you have to strategize on how you deal with the situation, You are able to upgrade your weapons, health and other few things to give you a better chance of getting through to the next chapter. In terms of horror it does indeed gives a sense of fear as you don't know what's round the corner and of course a good jumpscare now and again and it doesn't stray from it in later chapters. Character development could do with a slight boost as some of the characters feel a little bit blank but luckily the story revolving them keeps it fresh and interesting, I forgot to mention there are several puzzles within the game so you gotta look carefully otherwise you may fall into a trap. The soundtrack is perfect giving off a nice classic horror feel to it and I was rather surprised it was Gary Numan doing the ending theme so that's a nice little bonus. Overall I give this a solid 10/10 Thank You Shinji Mikami (The known creator of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Vanquish)

3.0 out of 5 stars Unbridled horror madness 10 Nov. 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation3|Edition:Standard Edition
It's great to see another survival horror coming out, it has been a while, but I am not sure that The Evil Within adds anything new or better to the genre. I was excited to get the game and on loading it up I had high hopes, but the more I played of it, the less engaged I became.

The playing style is very similar to Resident Evil 4 and 5, it's an over-the-shoulder 3rd person game which sees you kitted out with weapons and support items, facing up to multitudes of grisly horrors. The plot is probably more flimsy though. The game starts with your character, police officer Sebastian, investigating a mass slaughter at a hospital. This is a great opening but just as you start to get intrigued by what might await you as you explore the ominous building, you are knocked out and awake in some kind of nightmare world. That's pretty much it for logical story progression, because the remainder of the game sees you running, creeping and exploring through one nightmare location after another, on a never-ending chase/pursuit. Sebastian encounters lots of drooling goons who have to be dispatched, and in the a lot of the stages I really enjoyed this. Don't be put off by reviews saying that weaponry is scarce, it's not true, I always had the means to kill enemies, and very rarely resorted to just running. The stealth kills of the game are great fun and require some hiding and creeping skills. A lot of enemies can be killed this way, which saves on ammo hugely. There isn't a huge amount of ammo, but most annoyingly this is further hampered by the game's absurd inventory limits. You start the game with the ability to carry less than 10 bullets, and have to use the game's collectible currency (jars of green "brain fluid") to upgrade them. Ten bullets is just mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars BLOODY fantastic! 26 Jan. 2015

Amazing game, has resident evil 4 and 5 controls, mixed with silent hills enviroments. People have said the main character sebastian is boring, but i found him to be a cool character. He has more backstory than any character in the resident evil games, like his wife and child and his battles with alcoholism. He's a grizzled middle aged detective who looks like he dosent take no s*** and while he can clearly handle himself, he aint superman. Thats what this games nailed, you have a decent arsenal of upgradeable weapons, the usual survival horror offerings, revolver, shotgun, sniper rifle, crossbow with diffrent types of bows ( freeze, harpoon, flame etc) and grenades and a basic melee punch. You can also sprint for a limited time bedore you have to catch your breath. While that sounds alot the enemies you face are so lethal you'll find yourself constantly scrounging for ammo and healing items, and you'll always have at least one empty gun until you get some decent upgrades. Once you complete the game you'll unlock bonus weapons like an assault rifle and shinji mikamis trademark rocket launcher. Even then, you'll want to use these weapons sparingly cause theres no ammo for them once their empty. None of that infinte ammo nonsense from recent resi games. The bosses in this game are really challenging and creative, ranging from a giant spider woman who can crush your head into the ground if she gets a grip on you, a brute with a chainsaw and ' the keeper' a regenarating giant with a giant hammer. This game also is very tough, you will die alot paticularly on your first playthrough and its tempting to pack it in at times but this is one of those games where patience is rewarded, Im on my 5th playthrough and its getting better each time. Overall a brilliant game and while its probably not going to reach cult status like resident evil 4, this is destined to be known as one of the greatest survival horror games of all time, me mikamis still got it
