Manufacturer's Description

Star Trek Conquest is a single-player game of galactic conquest featuring a blend of strategy and action set in the STAR TREK: The Next Generation era. Players take control of Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, Dominion, and Breen forces and lead them in a campaign to control the galaxy, one planet at a time. Players must build and manage their growing empires in turn-based strategy, and then engage in all out starship combat in real-time action

Strategically, players must effectively manage their limited resources to expand their empire.Players can decide how to best achieve objectives by managing fleets, admirals, building support structures, researching technology and engaging enemies in combat. Once battle is initiated, the game switches to a ship level tactical view allowing players to take direct command of their ships and engage in real-time combat.

3.0 out of 5 stars To 'somewhat steadily' Go!, 25 Mar 2008
By C. Bodman "Carl B" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Star Trek Conquest is a turn-based strategy game that boils the Star Trek premise to its simplest possible form. You play as one of several character species [Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Breen etc.] with the aim of conquering all other players. You begin with one homeworld, connected to all other homeworlds via a serious of connected sectors. By building upto 3 fleets with 7 ships each you must invade and conquer each sector and defend your own territory from invaders.

When I first started playing this game I was incredibly disappointed. The game 'board' is incredibly basic and does not do justice to either the complexity of space or of the Star Trek series. Gameplay is equally as simple. You are allowed three types of ship - scout, cruiser and dreadnought - and seven ships per fleet. You 'purchase' ships through recources collected by mining colonies and can only construct or expand fleets in systems where you have built a starbase. When engaging in conflict you can decide to have the game fight the battle instantly, simulate it for you or you can fight it yourself in arcade mode. As with everything else, I was initially disappointed with the simplicity of the gameplay.

The good news is that, if you do like Star Trek and enjoy the feeling that victory brings, this game isn't half bad. Despite the simplicity of the game, conquering the entire map takes a long time so that its not just a matter of 10 minutes and you're finished. Victory is also rewarded with unlocked ships and species for the skirmish mode [battle gameplay mode between any two species of your choosing - a short and sweet play mode]. Despite its simplicity the game is not too easy and will keep you working for quite some time.
The battle visuals and gameplay also got better with time. Sure, its no stunning work of art but its still cool to control starships and get stuck into a good space battle - especially when your enemy is at their best.

Overall, this game is another disappointing instalment to the Star Trek gaming series that will fall short of any gaming or Trek fan's expectations. However, the game's simplicity is endearing and should keep your ego immersed in seeking galactic conquest for some time.

P.S. The sim-mode for fighting battles is incredibly biased. For best ass-kicking results, play the battle yourself.

2.0 out of 5 stars Today Is Not A Good Day To Die, 22 Mar 2008
By Scarlettspiderg (Salford, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Star Trek Conquest (not to be confused with Star Trek ConQuest) is a turn based "strategy" game mixed with bits of arcade action. If it was the first Star Trek strategy game it may have been impressive but having the likes of "Birth Of The Federation" (PC), "Armada (1 and 2)" (PC) and even "Tactical Assault" (DS) in Star Trek, Conquest falls short.

To start there are 6 playable species, each with their own advantages/disadvantages, however each species only has 3 types of ship. When building fleets, each fleet can only contain 7 ships and no two fleets can be within the same space sector.

The strategy section of the game is really basic and becomes annoying quite fast. The maps I've played on are small (10 space sectors - or there about) and the game turned into "How fast can I take control of the sectors".

When the combat does begin there are 3 options - Instant (CPU works out who would win and displays results instantly), Sim (CPU works out results and displays 2D "action") and Arcade. Arcade is the player taking control of the ships on a 2D battle field (no Z-Axis), its really a very cut down version of Star Trek "Legacy" (which was out on PC/XBox 360) with the player having a ship that can fire phasers or torpedos and with the option to switch to different ships in the fleet.

Graphically the game is very simple and the title is something that the original XBox, PS2 or Gamecube could have displayed with no problems.

And the major downfall of the game - No online multiplayer.

In all honesty I was expecting something along the lines of Birth Of The Federation (the games nearly 10 years old, how hard could it be to convert it to Wii?) but got a really poor (i.e. cut down) copy of Armada. Turn-based Strategy fans should ignore this title, it will give you a few minutes of fun whilst learning the controls and then become tedious.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor board game with extras., 21 April 2008
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
I hate reviewing something with so low a score / rating, but this really isn't Star Trek. You are in command of next to nothing and have such little options in way of development.
I felt it took it's lead from the board game Risk and came up with something about half as good. We are in space and the play area is less than that of the aforementioned board game.
Ok - you can choose to fight the battles yourself. This is less fun than Asteroids.
I didn't like it. I don't recommend you buy it.
