BRINK

PUBLISHER: Bethesda Softworks
DEVELOPER: Splash Damage
RELEASE DATE: Fall 2010
PLATFORM: Games for Windows / Xbox 360 / PlayStation®3 system
GENRE: First Person Shooter

STORY:
Brink takes place on the Ark, a man-made floating city that is on the brink of all-out civil war. Originally built as an experimental, self-sufficient and 100% “green” habitat, the reported rapid rise of the Earth’s oceans has forced the Ark to become home to not only the original founders and their descendants but also to thousands of refugees. With tensions between the two groups growing, Security and Resistance forces are locked in a heated battle for control of the Ark. Which side will you choose?

Key Features:

Not Just Another Hero – Brink’s advanced player customization offers a near-endless combination of looks for your character – allowing for the appearance of your character to be truly unique. As you progress through the game and acquire more experience, you’ll have even more opportunities for customization.

Two Sides to Every Story – Choose to fight through the single player campaign as either a member of the Resistance or the Security and then take your same character online to play cooperatively or competitively against other players.

Blurring the Lines – Take your unique character online at any time you choose! Brink allows you to seamlessly move between your single player campaign, co-op with friends, and intense multiplayer action. Multiplayer takes the story online where you can play with up to seven other people (or AI characters) cooperatively as you take on the opposing faction or with up to 16 players competitively.

Play SMART – Brink uses the familiar shooter controls that you’re used to, without frustrating, artificial constraints and adds a new feature: the SMART button. When you press the SMART button, the game dynamically evaluates where you’re trying to get to, and makes it happen. Whether you’re a seasoned FPS veteran or someone just getting started, you’ll be able to make more intelligent decisions during the fast-paced action with SMART.

Context-Sensitive Goals and Rewards - Objectives, communications, missions, and inventory selection are all dynamically generated based on your role, your condition, your location, your squad-mates, and the overall status of the battle in all gameplay modes. You’ll always know exactly where to go, what to do when you get there, and what your reward will be for success.

2.0 out of 5 stars PAY NOW. (MAY) PLAY LATER 13 May 2011
By NeuroSplicer TOP 100 REVIEWER
Platform for Display:PC
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
This is what you would call a game-designed-by-committee. It has a little bit of this and a little bit of that, things that may appeal to different tastes but do not always work together. And it feels more like a game designed with what the developers/publisher wanted it to do for them in mind rather than how it can be fun to play for the gamer.

IN AN ARK YOU ARE BOUND TO MEET ALL SORTS OF STRANGE ANIMALS
This is the game you would get if you were to cross Bioshock (story) with Borderlands (graphics & atmosphere) together with Team Fortress 2 and Mirror's Edge (gameplay). The story is quite original for a game, the parkour-style use of the environment works most of the time whereas the stylish shooting is slow in getting old.
You are asked to pick a side at the beginning but do not sweat it: not only it makes very little difference but you will be switching sides back and forth anyway!

ALTHOUGH SET ON A SHIP, THIS IS FAR FROM A PORT
And that is the good news. After a number of recent releases which were dumbed down to accommodate the (now 5-6 years old!) PS3 and Xbox-360, it was refreshing to see a game that was designed primarily for the PC. The controls work fine and the weapons are customizable. Now, if only you could actually shoot where you are aiming at!

THERE IS NO "I" IN TEAM. WELL, THERE IS NO "FUN" EITHER!
BRINK was designed to be primarily a multiplayer game - as it is apparent by its point system where kills are much less important than team-assistance actions. Yes, it has its own SinglePlayer mod; however, since it is a squad-based FPS, you will have to rely on the AI to complete your missions. And the AI in this game? Well, let's just say it would be a waste to send it to College!

SOUNDING THE FOG-HORN TO SURVIVE THE SEA OF STEAM
You guessed it, the game comes with mandatory STEAM activation and tie-in. Yes, that means the game never actually becomes yours and you will have to submit to the endless string of patches that may either fix the bugs or simply render your save-games unplayable. I deducted one star for this annoying DRM scheme; however, if this is something that is not important to you, you can adjust my rating accordingly.

THOSE ANNOYING SAND FLEAS!
Following the by now common practice to curb zero-day piracy, this is yet another STEAM game that is (most probably) intentionally released full of bugs and shortfalls - to be patched out ...gradually. And at a slow pace.
This means that although you already paid for the game, it will be some weeks (if not months) before you will be able to play it properly! Of course this is far from a solution to piracy, it is rather a how-to-shoot-your-own-product-in-the-foot practice, BETHESDA.

Overall, a buggy game on the brink of an identity crisis.

2.0 out of 5 stars Brief review for anyone on the fence 4 Dec 2011
Platform for Display:PC
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is a fun little game, decent graphics and gameplay. Would have given it 4 stars if I hadn't come back to it today and after 9 hours of weapon and perk earning and customising my character, I find Brink has irretrievably deleted that character. Absolutely killed any motivation to play the game any more and would recommend Team Fortress 2 to anyone with an interested in objective-oriented team-based FPS.

2.0 out of 5 stars BRINK BRINK WHY WHY NOT 7 Jun 2011
By Rude
Platform for Display:PC
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I do not normally write a review but on this occasion I find it necessary. The concept of Brink is brillant, jumping in and out of online play without effecting the game you are playing. Modifing your weaponary and personalising your avatar is what players want. On first appearence it's amazing playing through the mission and holds your attention well.
On the flip side once you have played through the missions once, it's boring boring boring. For example you pick up an objective say build some step to flank the enemy. You build them well done, they get destroyed so you build them again and again. This would be ok if your team supported you in this defending the steps, most human players want to run around and shoot things and not to help you out on your boring task. Unless you get a good server which has objective based players forget it. If you have a bunch of friends the possibilities for the game are great. However the AI controlled players are worse. They re-spawn together which is good then split up run towards the enemy and unless the numbers out way the enemy they die. They have very little concept of finding cover, waiting for support or supporting your objective.

If you have friends which play on a regular basis or clan which like team based FPS then worth the buy.

If you want a single player experience or don't have the time to play when friends do then AVOID don't waste your money. There are alot better FPS out or coming out in the near future.
