Format: Paperback
This is a European comic album that I have recently found in my local library. The 94-pages of comics feature the first two episodes of the second half of this ongoing serial by the Brazilian artist/writer Leo - `The Survivors' and `The Expedition'. This is a low-key story, in that there are no spectacular space battles, hostile aliens or other Hollywood or pulp SF activities, though there are the occasional natural catastrophe or man-made menace, usually in the form of angry men and oppressive governments, whereas mouthy women tend to be the heroes. I suspect the `leftish' author is channelling his experiences under the military dictatorship in his younger days. However, it is a really interesting story, a `proper' SF story about people, character, and exploration. The feel of the story reminded me of some of Michael Coney's novels, published back in the 1980s, which were also set on colony worlds, and didn't feature space ships, aliens or ray guns, just colonial life and adventures on worlds which were still relatively unknown.

`The Survivors' begins with an escape pod landing on Betelgeuse, with one character we first met in `The Catastrophe', and four others apparently from the previous episode. These five were on a search-and-rescue mission looking for a lost starship that had set out to colonise Betelgeuse, found it, and were hit by the same computer virus that disabled the ship they were searching for. They have escaped from their crippled ship and have come looking for any surviving colonists. After losing their leader, the group find a settlement, which has adopted a rather totalitarian regime in order to survive. There is a splinter group in a second settlement, and a political divide between them.

If you've read the Alderbaran series you will love this continuation of the series. While retaining many of the same characters and recuring themes you are treated to a whole different world with new problems to face. I can't recommend this series highly enough, although I would point out that the artwork is very european/realistic in style so this may put off some but will attract others.

You might review this book several times not to read it but to enjoy the wonderful art work. Very stunning and realistic, especially the nature scenes, landscapes and alien animals. Some of the art work look like photographs, very detailed. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

This series went down time went on not sure if they ran out of stories or imagination either way it started strong ended weak.
This happens with a lot of series so nothing to apologize for first books were great.

This is NOT volume 1 ! 22 Feb. 2013
By Vinyan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Beware, this is not volume 1, but this Kindle book comprises volume 2 and 3, NOT volume 1! When you start to read you are not at the beginning of the story, that's very frustrating because you don't know what happened before and makes it very difficult to understand what it is about. To make things worse the following volumes are not available, at least in Kindle version. To recap: it's like you can read several middle pages of a book, not the beginning, neither the end. I am very surprised this could happen with Amazon
