Biography

To observe Ra Ra Riot on stage is to observe a joyful experience in progress, somehow both intensely fun and just plain intense; it's a joy that's always aware that darkness and despair may be just around the corner, that life is both beautiful and terrible, and it’s a joy that is in fact amplified by this awareness.

It's this bittersweet dynamic that makes the rhumb ... Read more in Amazon's Ra Ra Riot Store

Product Description

Beta Love marks Ra Ra Riot s first outing as a four-piece. Inspired by their lean new lineup (with Wes Miles on vocals, Milo Bonacci on guitar, Mathieu Santos on bass and Rebecca Zeller on violin), the recording process found the band members expanding and redefining their roles within the new makeup of the group. They built upon demos created mostly by Miles and producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Wavves) at Sweet Tea Studios in Oxford, MS. Joined by session drummer Josh Freese (Devo, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer) the band enjoyed exploring its potential, experimenting with new influences and exciting sounds. Mathieu said of the sessions, Making the record was a lot of fun for us, because we were in a completely different environment, trying a completely new approach. We d been used to arriving at a session with every song totally arranged and figured out, but in Oxford, a lot of the creative decision-making happened in the studio, on the fly. We wanted to be outside of our collective comfort zone for this record. We wanted to be open to new things happening. There was a lot of building up and tearing down with Dennis a lot of problem solving, a lot of trial and error, and that was really exciting for us.

Love them but this one falls a bit short 19 Feb. 2013

I've loved Ra Ra Riot since the first time I heard Too Too Too Fast off The Rhumb Line and The Orchard was one of my fave albums of 2010 so I was extremely excited about getting a new album in 2013. Unfortunately this time around they took a more dance-y, electronic vibe with Beta Love and it falls a bit flat. Not sure if this has to do with the departure of their cellist or not but I definitely miss their more autumnal sounding chamber pop style. When I Dream, That Much, and I Shut Off are the songs closest to their old sound off Beta Love. It's not a bad album, but it's just not great like the first two LPs.

On a more positive note, I saw them play the El Rey a week ago here in LA and they were still one of the best sounding live bands out there (have seen them 3 times now) so even if you don't love this record, don't let it stop you from seeing them live. And they do have a cellist for their live show so they still nail the older material. Also, all the songs off Beta Love sounded significantly better live which was a pleasant surprise.

Catchy 22 Jan. 2013
By srduncan - Published on Amazon.com
The one thing that is unmistakable about ra ra riot is that high voice of Wes Miles. I had a hunch this album would go in a more electronic direction after seeing their moog session [...] beta love is catchy and happy. Nice work ra ra.

It's actually quite good. A few of the songs are a little disjointed, but the strings are lovely (per the usual). I feel like it's a step down from their previous album, but have enjoyed listening to it nonetheless!

Experimental Album 4 Feb. 2013
By Mae - Published on Amazon.com

I felt that this album was very good for taking a new direction and changing things up. What I think Ra Ra Riot loses in this album is the musical and lyrical content we are use to as listeners. The album is overall very catchy and listenable with a sound that isn't heard very often. We need to consider that bands sometimes have an album in there catalog that more fun and experimental. My only complaint is that I'm going to have to wait a couple more years for the next album, which I feel will be more focused since they will be use to there new lineup as a band and its musical direction.

Love the new direction. Same great songwriting with new attitude. So fun and catchy. Favorites are When I Dream, Beta Love, Wilderness, and Is It Too Much.
