Beta is the story of Raju (Anil Kapoor), the only child of a widowed multi-millionaire. Raju's father can provide him anything he wants, but Raju's only desire is to have a mother's love. To please him, his father gets married to Laxmi (Aruna Irani), thinking that she will take care of Raju. Raju becomes completely devoted to his stepmother, doing whatever she wishes. Raju's stepmother keeps Raju uneducated, under the pretext that education would get her son a job working for other people, while she wants her him to be self employed. As he grows up, Raju's father is gradually isolated from the family and locked in a dark room of the family home, being labelled as mentally unstable.Raju, meanwhile, meets Saraswati (Madhuri Dixit). Raju sees her being abducted and assaulted at a fair. After he saves her, the two fall in love. Raju marries Saraswati after everyone in the village believes that she is no longer chaste. Saraswati discovers that Laxmi's motherly love for Raju is fake and all that Laxmi is interested in is capturing Raju's wealth. She is horrified to find Raju's father being treated as a mentally ill patient. Only after speaking to him does she realise that the reason for Raju's naive nature and uneducated status is because his stepmother manipulated him so that she can take advantage of him. Laxmi has another son from the father who is being educated but also seeks Raju's wealth which his mother Laxmi intends for him to inherit. And thus begins a battle within the household between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law which involves Saraswati trying to outdo Laxmi.

5.0 out of 5 stars One boy's love for his mother 30 July 2007
By The Patriarch - Published on Amazon.com
This is an awesome Bollywood classic. I can't believe it's unavailable. Check it out on Netflix. They have it. All the songs are awesome. The plot is totally original and kept me on my toes. It is almost like a story from classical mythology. A boy's mother dies at a very young age and he is heartbroken. His father remarries and the boy is introduced to her on his birthday. For him, his mother had returned. One prob- his mother is out to get the family fortune, because as in all Bollywood movie, the family is very wealthy. This is a long term scam though and will take years to pull off. The boy is so infatuated with his mother that he takes every word of hers as gospel. She has him work in the fields like a peasant and denies him an education. He grows up to be very strong, but very stupid. Things get difficult when the boy, now a man, falls in love. The girl finds about about the mother's evil scheme but the man is so stupid and brainwashed with her that he doesn't believe her. He is so angry with her at one point he belts her a good one. "Never talk bad about my mother!" The only bad part in this movie is there is a fat bald woman!!! She runs around and hits the main character after he takes off her wig, revealing her baldness. Every song is a classic, this movie is awesome.
5.0 out of 5 stars This movie has it all 19 Mar 2009

Anil Kapoor, who plays the TV show host in Slumdog Millionaire, starred in this epic melodrama alongside the magnificent Madhuri Dixit. It's got it all -- melodrama, deceit, catfights, and of course some great music and production numbers. I've seen it several times and never tire of it. Anil Kapoor, by the way, is superb in this role -- lithe, charming, energized and enthusiastic. His physical dexterity really is remarkable.

This movie is awsome! Not like most bollywood movies you would expect. The story is simple, yet you can watch it a thousand times without getting bored. My two favorite bollywood actors perform a very sexy dance in this movie.
