5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific 2nd adventure for Jess Tennant. 13 Feb. 2014
By Liz Wilkins TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Thank you for the review copy via netgalley. BIG thank you.

Jess Tennant has now been living in Port Sentinel for three months, and is just beginning to relax and think of it as home after the murderous events of the summer. But in the small hours of a dark night, a teenage boy is left for dead by the side of the road. Seb Dawson has a serious head injury and may not survive – and Jess decides to find out who beat him up, and why?

So for those of you who have not yet read “How to Fall” do that first because that is the beginning of Jess Tennant’s adventures in Port Sentinel, and whilst you could quite happily read Bet Your Life on its own you will certainly get a lot more fun out of it if you have followed along from the start.

In this instalment, Jess is trying to keep her head down, living a quiet life with her family after the events of the first novel, but frankly I knew going in that this wouldnt last long simply by knowing the character – and I was right. Jess has a tendency to get involved simply by being in the right place at the wrong time..and once she has something in her head, despite her own best efforts its not going anywhere until she has fixed it. I love that about her.

This time she is caught up in some violent events after Seb Dawson, a guy she has had little dealings with, is found horrifically injured at the side of the road. When Seb’s sister begs her to find out what happened and why, Jess once more enters the maelstrom that is Port Sentinel and its people with all their hidden secrets and conflicts. At the same time she has to deal with her, quite frankly, complicated and messy love life whilst also keeping a weather eye on her mother who has man troubles of her own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bet Your Life I will read more of Jane Casey 18 Mar. 2015
Format:Paperback
I love Jane Casey and her Jess Kerrigan books for young adult are really good, Once more Jess is drawn into a case in Port Sentinel. A young man found by the roadside, His sister asks Jess to look into it and what she uncovers in very unsavoury.
Add into the mix Jess' mixed up relationship with Will Henderson the son of her mother's first love and the story is a real mix of intrigue. This is the kind of book I would have loved growing up and therefore it will not deter me from reading them even now. Well recommended.

Catch up on Jess Tennant and her brilliant extended family- you’ll love the secrets and angsts of life in a seaside town.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality crime writing for any age... 17 Feb. 2014
By FictionFan TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan is one of my favourite detectives - a series which has improved with each new book. I love Casey's realistic characterisation and strong plotting, and although the storylines are dark, Casey's trademark humour lifts them, making the books considerably more enjoyable than the majority of grimy, gloomy books that are filling the crime shelves at the moment. Now Casey is alternating the Kerrigan books with the Jess Tennant series for Young Adults, and she brings all the same hallmarks of quality to these.

After her experience in the first book in the series, How to Fall, Jess has developed a bit of a reputation in the small coastal town of Port Sentinel as someone who can get to the truth of a problem. So when Seb Dawson is found badly injured after a Hallowe'en party, his little sister, Beth, asks Jess to investigate. Jess is reluctant, partly because she doesn't want to cross swords again with the local police inspector Dan Henderson, Will's dad. But when it looks as though the police are going to write the matter off as an accident, Jess can't accept this and so her investigation begins...

The first thing I have to say is that this book is not aimed at me. I ceased to be a Young Adult many moons ago, and I must admit that any time I read a YA book I feel a) tremendously old and b) thrilled to bits that I'm not sixteen any more and never will be again. Having made that disclaimer, I still find these books more enjoyable than most of the 'adult' crime I read, and that's down to Casey's story-telling skills.

Jess is developing nicely in this second outing.

'Bet Your Life' is the second book about teenage detective Jess Tennant. Although she claims in the book that she's not interested in becoming Port Sentinel's answer to Nancy Drew, she has the same quick wit and ingenuity and the same uncanny knack of seeing things that other people don't. It's this skill which gives her the ability to connect all the dots and uncover the truth, even when others may want to keep it hidden. Of course, this also means that she often risks her own life in her single-minded pursuit of the truth but that only makes me admire her even more.

Jess is asked to investigate the case of local boy Seb Dawson, who has been left for dead by a supposed hit and run. His little sister suspects that there's a lot more to the 'accident' and wants Jess to find out the truth. As she begins to dig into the incident, she discovers some startling secrets about him, as well as a hidden conspiracy more shocking than she could ever have imagined.

The opening chapter of 'Bet Your Life' was so creepy. You know that something terrible is going on but you have no idea exactly what yet and who is involved. It was a fantastic start to the book and really sent shivers down my spine as I read it.

As well as some intriguing and unexpected plot twists concerning Seb's case, I also like the fact that Jane Casey interweaves Jess's day to day life into the story too. She's dealing with problems with her family, as well as romantic troubles and this helps to ground the story and make it more realistic. After the events of the first book in the series, things are not great between her and Will but she also has another boy, Ryan, chasing after her too.

Tense, twisty and with an ingenious mystery, I completely loved every second of this book. I sincerely hope there are many more Jess Tennant thrillers to come as she's Nancy Drew for a whole new generation of readers!
