Book Description

1 Dec 2008 Charlton Standard Catalogue
A new edition, the 10th, was released December 7th, 2008 in North America, and will be released January 2nd, 2009 in the United Kingdom. This 352-page book brings the collector current to 2009. The 9th edition was published three years ago, it was time for a revision as the market has changed completely. As you know, starting with the 9th edition in 2005, we divided Royal Doulton Beswick Storybook Figurines into two books, based on the brands: Royal Doulton and Beswick. Our simple reasoning for this division was the sale of the Beswick brand by Royal Doulton. Beswick Collectables is a compilation of all storybook, cartoon and film characters produced by the John Beswick Studio. Here the collector will find a lineup of characters from many charming and whimsical series such as Alice in Wonderland, Beatrix Potter, Paddington Bear and many Disney films and cartoons. Also, there are the creatures from David Hand s Animaland, English Country Folk, Hippos on Holiday and the Footballing Felines. Along with the traditional storybook series readers are now able to explore figures from Animal Fun, Monkey Band, Penguin Family, Bush Babies, Cats Chorus, Kitty McBride s Happy Mice, and much, much more. The Beswick figurines removed from Royal Doulton Beswick Figurines, 6th edition, and the Beswick character and toby jugs removed from the 5th edition of Royal Doulton Beswick Jugs, have found a new home in Beswick Collectables. The introduction to Beatrix Potter Figurines by Frank Corley has been revised, with all tables in a clear, user friendly format. The Beatrix Potter figurines are showing a rebound from the 9th edition, prices are steady to higher. Thirty-two colour pages, in four eight-page sections are disbursed throughout the book. The first two sections are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. The third section is devoted to the early rarely seen figures produced by the John Beswick Studio, plus Beswick Hummels, Dickens Ware, and Character and Toby Jugs. The fourth section includes storybook characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Rupert and His Friends, and Disney Cartoon and Film Characters. The pricing which is in four currencies (UK pounds sterling, United States, Canadian and Australian dollars) has been completely revised and updated to reflect the market conditions of 2009. Beswick Collectables is an informative and valuable reference tool with which the Beswick collector may assemble a rewarding collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Handbook for Collectors 19 Feb 2011
By Ez
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Although called "Beswick Collectables", for the ranges it covers, it also includes figures produced under the Royal Albert and Royal Doulton brands.

The problem with a publication like this is that by the time it hits the streets, the prices are already out of date and, as this 10th Edition was first published in December 2008 (although the copyright date is 2009), changes in fashion and the continuing growth of online purchasing means that, whereas some pieces have increased in value, many are now available for much less than quoted in the book - for a more up-to-date guide to how much they are selling for, check out the "completed" listings on ebay (this shows the actual price that was paid for something), go to the websites of more traditional auction houses or browse round your local antique shops.

BUT...don't let this put you off. I didn't buy this book to look at the prices; I bought it because I wanted a comprehensive and detailed listing of the collectables I'm interested in, so I can first choose the figures I want and second research the current market.

This extraordinary little gem gives me exactly what I need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Comprehensive Reference Book 9 Mar 2011
This book is an excellent, comprehensive reference work of Beswick 'collectables'. This covers a wide range of figures including storybook, film and cartoon characters as well as various others which do not fall into this categorisation. So for example, The Cats Chorus, Footballing Felines, the Character Jugs and English Country Folk are included although they are not really covered by these categories. All the essential detail is there ie designer, description and the years of introduction and retirement. This book is invaluable to any serious collector and my only serious criticism of this aspect of the book, is that it would be much better if it was all in colour rather than just 32 pages. I presume the price of printing is the issue here, but is colour printing that much more expensive these days?

Do take the price guide with a pinch of salt. Charlton do have an unenviable task in collating information from many different sources - auctions, internet, dealers etc. and take an informed view as to what the current market value of any particular piece is. However, that is not to say this is the 'right' price and you will find that a bit of patience and a lot of searching around will mean you can normally buy much more keenly. Start by checking out what is on Ebay!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from this man - curt seller! 5 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
'As in all trades, a few booksellers
overprice, but no-one has to buy from them. Most of us are perfectly
honest, and are just trying to make a living at something we enjoy.
Without this service, you would not have found your book. Kindly don't
buy anything from me again'.
