Can't recommend this! 13 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm rarely motivated to write a review but am doing so in the hope of saving others some expense here. As a regular walker and user of walking guides I unfortunately found this to be one of the worst guides I've ever purchased.

The maps included are tiny, drawn by hand and not to scale. In some cases the maps are split into two to fit on a page (despite already being very small!) I found them almost impossible to follow without detailed study.

The directions are somewhat odd and unhelpful, for example describing a route, then concluding it to be 'not too satisfactory' and suggesting taking an alternate route, which is then described in much less detail.

Personally I struggle to see how you could use this book to follow the walks without getting lost (although I'm happy to stand corrected!)

On the positive side it does include background information on items of interest enroute such as memorials, natural features and churches - indeed, as an example, for one walk there are 6 pages devoted to the history of the places enroute and less than one page to the walk itself.

I have only been moved to write this review because of the comments of the 1st reviewer.

This book is not the best thing since sliced bread but it is a very very good introduction to some well known and not so well known walks in South Wales. What I like about its style is that there is a section on local history or tradition for each walk, a fairly easy to understand grading for distance and difficulty of walks in the area and an overview of the whole at the beginning.

The book is obviously written by an enthusiast and keen walker rather than a "tour guide" writer. The book has a "Wainwright" feel to it with line drawn maps but also some great photos. All in all I think the balance of the book is spot on. I dont personally use "guide books" to follow religiously for the routes I walk, that is what an OS map is for! If you attempt to use a guide book exclusively to follow a route then you will come a cropper at some point, especially when in mountainous areas. I personally tend to use guide books to give me inspiration and ideas for great walks.

All in all a great book for finding out about great walks in and around South Wales and one I do refer to time and time again even though I have been walking in this area for 30 years
