Lake District Walks 1 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
I was a little disappointed with this book. We took it to the lake district and although it contained lots of information on the various walks described, it was difficult to follow the maps, even with the ordinance survey maps we had taken along as well. The habit of turning the map around and sticking an arrow on to show north I found particularly irritating. Equally it was annoying that no time indication was given for the various walks - the moderate walks were very different in standard, ranging from a bit of a stroll for a couple of hours to a six or seven hour trip over a number of peaks. Some of the walks were on paths that were very easy to find and walk along, and others were hard to follow even with the use of a compass, and again this was not really made clear in the book. That said, we had a number of good days out following the walks, many of which were extremely good.

This is quite a poor book. The only good thing is that there are many walks in it, but the description of the walks is really lacklustre - it really just gives directions, rather than background information. Also, seeing the very easy Loughrigg Fell Walk lumped in with the difficult Blencathra Edges in the 'Moderate' Section is ridiculous. I certainly wouldn't trust it to assess the difficulty of a walk. As far as hand-drawn maps are concerned, they may have worked for the much more detailed Wainwright's Guide, but in this brief book they are useless. I have never taken it to the Lakes with me - the book has been a waste of money as there are so many other, better ones with similar walks.

Best Walks in the Lake District

Needs to be read in conjunction with several other similar texts. Our experience of planning our walking holiday in the Lakes was that different books had different approaches to walks and that combining two or three versions of the same walk was the best.
This one has a number of the 'classic' walks well-documented.
