Good, but not the classic Spann album,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best of the Vanguard Years (Audio CD)
Best of the Vanguard years pulls together two Spann sessions; the first 5 tracks were recorded in 1965, the rest of the album was recorded in 1968 - the latter being separately available as the album 'Crying Time.' The album also includes some 'bonus tracks' which, to me, are a mixed blessing...
To those who already own, and love, some early solo Spann (Otis Spann is the Blues, perhaps) the early part of the album will not disappoint. Tracks like Marie and Burning Fire are classic Spann, and Spann's Stomp cracks on apace with SP Leary on drums. Twisted Snake, Home to Mississippi and Otis's cover of Muddy's Mule Kicking in my Stall also get a thumbs up. But several of the other tracks, notably You Said You'd be on Time, are pretty weak - and personally, I wasn't taken by Spann's use of a Hammond organ on 3-4 tracks, instead of piano. Moreover, several of the bonus tracks are gospel songs (He's got the Whole World in his hands)which, to me, dilute the blue feel of the album. All in all, it's a fair album - but to me the variety of styles, and the use of Hammond, reduces the album's cohesiveness - I find myself skipping tracks... But, of course, you might enjoy the variety...
