2.0 out of 5 stars Tubular B£LL$, 24 July 2002

You gotta hand it to Virgin Records, haven't you?! Since it's almost been proven that anything bearing both Mike's name and 'that' bell is bound to be a good seller... albeit a product quite weak.

Don't get me wrong - the Tubular Bells series is not without its share of awesome music: from the opening piano arpeggios to the clanging bells of "Far Above the Clouds" you are offered a lush and inviting musical landscape... but trying to compile a 'best of' is pure stupidity... especially when you include part of "The Millennium Bell" (often cited, unintentionally, as TB4 as a result of the cover's symmetry) which was, let's face it, one of Mike's weaker efforts of the last decade.

It may set you back a bit more, but for a satisfying musical experience, buying all 3 TB albums (ignore 'Millennium Bell' for now) comes more recommended and includes more first-rate material than is presented on this compilation.

3.0 out of 5 stars BofTB - a real mystery, 10 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Of Tubular Bells (Audio CD)
Am I the only one wondering why Virgin opted to release "The Best of Tubular Bells"? From the poorly executed front cover (splice lines in this day and age!) to the lack of HDCD encoding to the hodgepodge nature of the compilation, BofTB seems to be a halfhearted effort all around. I was intrigued by the project's 7-track attempt to edit together elements from various performances (studio, orchestral, and live) to "recreate" TB, but the result doesn't shed any new (or even interesting) light on Oldfield's work. What's more, the album ends up drawing heavily from the original studio album -- a sure sign that the notion of a patchwork TB was a fairly limited one. So why WAS this title released? True fans will recognize that the original music stands on its own (especially now that most of Oldfield's catalog has been remastered); casual fans will miss the cohesive impact that should be experienced to enjoy TB at its fullest.

I LOVE THIS CD, IT HAS THE BEST BITS FROM ALL THE TUBULAR BELLS CDS. THE ONLY COMPLAINT IS THERE WAS NOT MORE TRACKS FROM TUBULAR BELLS 2 AND 3. BUT THIS IS A GREAT CD TO CHILL OUT TO.

1.0 out of 5 stars this is the Woooooorrrrssstt!!!!!, 31 Oct 2003
By Mike Chadwick - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Best Of Tubular Bells (Audio CD)
i never saw somebody wanted to make best of from a huge Rhinoceros.
TUBULAR BELLS,TUBULAR BELLS II and TUBULAR BELLS III are three different points of view - each of Bells has different music.

TUBULAR BELLS I - 2 long pieces - 25 minutes each - very dark and meditative

TUBULAR BELLS II - more joyfull and new-age styled.many synths

TUBULAR BELLS III - electronic music with many interesting ideas.many styles mixed.

Anyway - these compilation is propably made only to lower the budget hole in MIke's wallet.
better buy all three parts of BElls separately instead of buying this NIGHTMAER....
