Format:Audio CD
I first heard Squirrel Nut Zippers' 'Hell' off the 'Dead Like Me' TV show and I just couldn't get its catchy rhythm out of my head! I normally don't buy a band's CD based on one song but I just couldn't find any of their mp3s to sample, so I took a chance and decided to purchase this Best of album - which i reckon is a good way of introducing non-SNZ fans like myself to their most popular songs.
Anyway, on to my review... I was not at all disappointed when I first popped this CD in! Their music does have a way of making you want to tap your feet to the catchy beats one minute, but the best thing about this band is their only female member, Katherine Whalen, whose voice is just mesmerising! The first time I heard her voice thoughts of Billie Holiday came to mind. I absolutely love Billie Holiday so there's no doubt that hearing Ms. Whalen's voice striked something deep within me. She may not be Billie but she's just as excellent!
My most favourite tracks? Anything But Love, Under The Sea (think Billie Holiday voicing that little crustacean in The Little Mermaid! ;)), Bedbugs and, of course, Hell.
So there you go: Love the music, love the band. There's no doubt I'm a big SNZ fan now. Go get this CD! I assure you you won't be disappointed!

Format:Audio CD
I got this album on the strength of hearing one song off it on RadioParadise.com, which is something of a hit and miss way of buying CDs in my experience (no criticism of radioparadise intended!). This was a definite hit though! The album has a strong retro sound, stirring up memories of old black and white movies where the heroine is a troubled jazz/blues singer in a speakeasy (or something along those lines any way!). That said, not all the songs are sung by the female lead (who has a very distinctive voice) - some of the more immediately appealing numbers, such as "Hell" and "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" are by the male vocalist. Most of the tracks are extremely catchy and up-tempo, and performed by musicians who seem to really love and have fun with their art. If you have heard anything by them before and enjoyed it, then I would be amazed if you didn't also enjoy this album. If you've never heard of them before, and have reasonably eclectic tastes in music, give it a try.

This is an excellent compilation of their work featuring the majority of my favourite songs that got me dancing round my house thankful that no one was watching! i'd recommend anything by the Squirrel Nut Zippers but this is a really great mix of their music, well thought out and put together.
