Review

Keen on canines and a sucker for stitching? A new collection of patterns shows you how to combine your passions and knit your own pooch. The knitwear designers Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne share two great loves: knitting and dogs. And their latest project, Best in Show: Knit Your Own Dog, is the love child. This wryly photographed book contains the knitting patterns for 25 dogs, from the fairly straightforward dachshund to the more challenging old English sheepdog and Afghan hound. You can knit your very own royal corgi, Lassie or even Bo, the Obamas' super-trendy Portuguese water dog. --The Saturday Telegraph, 11th September 2010

They might just be the perfect pet... fluffy and cute, but with no vet's bills, feeding or pooper-scooping required. A new knitter's guide lets you make your own man's best friend from wool - or to put it another way, "stitch your own bitch". The book of doggy knitting patterns shows you how, with simple knit, purl and loopy stitches, to conjure up your own canine companion. You can choose a pedigree pooch or mix and match breeds and design your own mongrel from a selection of canine components. Knit the legs and tail of a poodle on a labrador and, hey presto, you have your very own labradoodle. Just don't expect it to fetch your slippers... --The Sunday Mirror, 12th September 2010

STOCKING FILLER TO SAVE THE DAY This is a quirkily charming book and the results look brilliant. --The Daily Telegraph, 4th December 2010

Best in Show shows you - really it does - how to knit your own pack of pooches, from dalmations to poodles --The Sunday Telegraph, 28th November 2010

For all those needle-clacking members of 'stitch and bitch' knitting groups around the country, a selection of patterns for the cutest toy dogs in the world. Mad but absolutely brilliant. --Reviewed in Bella magazine, 4th January 2011

This is a charming little book which celebrates the wonderful diversity of dogs in a series of deft patterns which conjure up grumpy bulldogs, chic poodles and alert fox terriers from a few scraps of wool and some strategic stuffing. There are 25 breeds featured here, each of which will be instantly recognised by doting owners, and the funny and well researched text tells you a little of the history and features of every one.
It is crisply edited and photographed to make it a thoroughly grown-up pleasure - I found my copy being admired and chuckled over by friends who hadn't the slightest interest in knitting - but it will also appeal to any animal-loving child.
The patterns, though mercifully short, are tricky enough to be a satisfying challenge for anyone who enjoys combining knitting with a bit of crafty flair. The real secret is in the final assembly, when you tweak the limbs and tail into place and suddenly find that your cuddly toy has a proper dog stance and an attitude out of all proportion to its size.
It isn't all snooty pedigree pooches either, devoted mongrel owners are catered for with a section on how to assemble your very own unique "57 varieties" dog.
Fun - and weirdly practical too. Love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fiddly and Frustrating 23 Feb 2011
By bookmad
Format:Hardcover
Have only tried a couple of the designs so far - the Dachshund was really fiddly to knit and the instructions for sewing the body pieces together I thought were poor - and I am not a novice knitter. Am going to give it another go using double knit and see how it turns out.

Will persevere with some more of the breeds, but maybe adapt them a bit and I do agree with one of the other reviewers that the facial features are bland, but will make my own up to give them a bit of character.

Have just started the bulldog so hope it turns out ok!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but has LOTS of mistakes in it. 18 April 2011
By Nymph
Format:Hardcover
I've only used 2 of there patterns so far, and already I've come across MAJOR errors in the patterns, which if you followed, you'd end up with a lumpy, deformed dog!

Border collie, RS of body, row 2 SHOULD read:
P8cr, p4bl, p3cr

This is just one error. they should have CHECKED before publishing such an expensive book!!

Good little book - the dog did not take long to knit but loads of time to sew up! Most are good reproductions of breeds - a couple, not so good!
