Multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger is one of the most underated songwriters in the UK. Largely remembered for the Goodbye Jumbo album (Q magazines Album of the year 1990) and the number 2 long player Bang!, he has soldiered on through severe illness, record label problems and dwindling commercial success under the moniker of World Party. Shrewdly now in complete control of his back catalogue, and releasing records through his own Seaview label, this is the perfect time for a 'Best Of' and to reapraise an excellent and striking body of work.
Wallinger is in thrall to late period Beatles, Sign O The Times era Prince and the Stones circa Exile On Mainstreet - their collective influence runs through all these songs.
'Message In The Box' still remains the difinitive World Party single - lots of ringing guitars, multi-layered harmonies and that slightly ramshackle Stones vibe. 'Is It Like Today' - still the bands biggest hit to date - successfully managing to condense mankind's bloody history into four eventful minutes whilst remembering to be insanely catchy. Debut single 'Ship Of Fools' is an overlooked gem and 'God On My Side' is a spit for a long lost George Harrison Beatles classic circa 68.
Perhaps the biggest commercial success on this compilation is 'She's The One' - an ELOish style ballad that was covered by Robbie Williams (in an almost identical arrangement and using many of Wallinger's band mates) and scored a number 1 hit in the UK.
It's dissapointing that the excellent 'All I Gave' and the Prince influenced 'Here Comes The Future' aren't included (that would have earned an extra star) but if you are new to the delights of World Party then this is the place to start.
