First Class Performances 31 Dec. 2012
By Mark Van Vlack - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
I bought this album in 1977 when it first came out. The quality of performance is outstanding which is uncommon in the ragtime genre. This Album gives you a great view of ragtime during the Joplin period.

Two complaints about the MP3's here represented: First, Where did Joseph Lamb's Cottontail Rag go? The original album had it and it was a remarkable and sensitive performance.

Second: The titles of the pieces are wrong from Track 16 to the end! They should be as follows:

.......Should Be
16. Ragtime Dance
17. Alabama Jigger
18. The Cascades
19. Swipesy Cake Walk
20. Russian Rag
21. Grace and Beauty
22. Polyragmic
23. Carrie's Gone to Kansas City

Buy the Album but fix the Track names!
Max Morath plays Scott Joplin... and wins 15 Jan. 2011

I enjoy Joplin's music, and Max Morath is for me the undisputed number one interpreter. Joining him is the Original Rag Quartet with splendid arrangements of several Joplin compositions. Of particular interest is 'A Real Slow Drag' from Jolin's opera Treemonisha, one of the harmonically most pleasing arrangements I have ever heard. This CD belongs in every musicologist's collection. Enjoy... I sure did, and will for a long time to come.
This recording lacks bass 14 Dec. 2013

The CD lacks bass. I have the LP which I love, and it sounds very much like a real piano. I bought the CD for portability and was disappointed by the sound quality. The bass portion of the spectrum is greatly diminished, it doesn't sound like a real piano. I think it was recorded from the same master that was used to cut the original LP, but that master had the RIAA bias in it that reduces bass and emphasizes treble.

I have this in LP, so was thrilled to find a version I can enjoy now. Great rags from the best ragtime composers.

Excellent 3 Jan. 2015

This is very, very good. This performer brings an extra liveliness and less repetition to this very special American music. Ragtime is a historical treasure, and this musician preserves it in what I think is an excellent presentation. I would have preferred some other selections to present than a couple that are on the album.
