Sammy Davis Jr was a great entertainer. Singer, dancer, comedian, he was a real all rounder. In the time he was a star it was a real struggle for a black man to make it, and he did so much to break down the colour bar. This disc presents him doing what he did best, entertaining.
A well chosen selection of tracks show the breadth of his singing talent, from ebullient swing to slow, intimate ballads. He had incredibly good pitch and intonation, and makes this set of standards from the American songbook his very own.
There is just one fly in an otherwise perfect ointment. A couple of the tracks include zany funnyman antics that haven't really stood the test of time. And the classic Rhythm Of Life is missing, but apart from that it's all good. 4 stars.

Back in days when an entertainer could really entertain, Sammy brought some showbiz pizazz to the world. With a voice that NEVER hits a bum note and ear to choosing the right songs, Sammy was truly a legend and if you like your music well sung, well performed and full of jazzy pizazz, you couldn't do better than a night with Sam!
