Anyone who (really) knows hip hop knows the role of the DJ and the importance of the Mix Tape. A quality hip hop act is worth one, a timeless hip hop catalogue of repertoire is worth one, add J Period to splice and dice the two ingredients together and its worth one hundred.
I've recommended this Mix CD to many Roots fans who have since moved on to other acts, and it has succeeded is bringing them back to Philly to re-appreciate this band, their skill and the power of their work. Classics are there, such as the jaw dropping "Next Movement", but the way in which new and re-worked material is woven in and out of this mix makes it a trip. A real trip.
In an age of Spotify playlists, it's phenomenal to see what technology can't touch, which is being placed in the hands of a master DJ with a phenomenal live act to cut up. Very few CDs have had the same level of "lock in" as this - from the word go, there is no skipping, and no deviation in attention.
Strongly recommended for the iPod when out and about too (jogging, travelling) as it just trips you out.
