The Best Revenge
.
This prequel to the Camilla Randall mysteries romps through the glitzy 1980s, when 19-year-old Camilla loses everything: her fortune, her gay best friend, and eventually her freedom. When she’s falsely accused of a TV star's murder, she discovers she’s made of sterner stuff than anyone imagined—herself included.
.
In typical Anne R. Allen fashion, the plot twists and turns from one breathless misadventure to another, leading to a finish sure to catch the reader by surprise.

From the Author

Set in the long ago days before mobile phones, text messaging, or even the Internet, nineteen-year-old Connecticut debutante Camilla Randall faces a tough coming of age. When her family lose their fortune, and her mother marries a J.R. Ewing wannabe, she flees in her DeLorean to her gay best friend, only to discover he appears to have gone tragically straight. When she finds a dead TV star in her bed, loses her job and car and has to take a job working for her worst enemy, in order to afford a bed-sit in one of the less fashionable areas of Southern California, her problems have only begun

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne Allen Strikes Again 21 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback
Anne Allen has done it again, another witty, engaging look at the foibles of our times. Well, my times, I was there for the 80s. Like Food of Love, Best Revenge is part bildungs roman, part picaresque "Perils of Pauline" (Calamities of Camilla?)that while laugh-out-loud funny, carries a message about how we view ourselves and how others' views of us may conflict, yet make us grow. Just as when I read Food of Love, I was up till the wee hours reading the last third of the book at breakneck (or break-page-turning thumb) speed. But this time, when I finished, I immediately started over and reread the first third! See if you can read it just once!

5.0 out of 5 stars ANNE ALLEN'S "BEST REVENGE" A GREAT READ 4 Oct 2005
Format:Paperback
This is a great read: very funny, fast paced, and full of life. The reflections on the 80's are perfect; disco glitter spangled every page. Outrageous details of designer clothes sharpen the sparkle. The unlikely coincidences and romantic confusion remind me of a Shakespearean comedy, and the creative development of the gay characters and culture was marvelous. What I loved best was the unexpected humor created as predictable characters act against type. Life can be funnier!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Light Hearted Romp 26 Sep 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I was entranced by the charming heroine of The Best Revenge , a wealthy but clueless debutante who is sudenly forced to make her way in the world totally dependent on her own resources. I suffered as I watched her stumble into one danger after another while she crossed the U.S. in her quest for the safety of a college friend. But Allen recounts her adventures with a sparkling humor that makes you laugh even while you hold your breath. This book is a rare treat-a funny page-turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Beach Read 29 May 2012
By anne gallagher - Published on Amazon.com
Once I started THE BEST REVENGE, I found I couldn't put it down. An engaging Hollywood caper set during the 1980's pits a fashionable New York debutante against a hard nosed reporter who's had a bad day. I don't even know what to classify this book as -- thriller, romance, comedy, drama, whodunit, who's going to do it -- it has everything, including a sappy happy ending.

Allen's thinly veiled L.A. stars light up the pages as I tried to figure out who was who. Camillia Randall starts off as a lowly health food columnist who then somehow gets involved in the murder/suicide of superstar Jon Don Parker. Laughs ensue as she tries to explain to everyone she didn't do it. Nobody believes her except a crazy old lady who has a penchant for purple. (Who truly is the "star" of this novel.)

Allen's wit and dry humor had me from the first, but this line -- She knew he was probably being honest, but how could she trust a man who said he'd always been a liar. -- is an absolute gem.

I cannot wait to read the rest of Allen's work. And definitely put this on your summer beach reading list. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anne Allen's at it again 3 Oct 2005
By C. S. Perryess - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Poor Camilla Randall is forced to make her getaway in a DeLorean from accusations of murder. Instead of heading back to her past to fix her future, she finds a new and laughable life, avoiding a lusty Colonel Sanders with something other than chicken on his mind, embracing an egotistic yet attractive news editor -- also with something other than chicken on his mind, and appreciating a charmingly wacky senior citizen with a lavender Edsel and who-knows-what on her mind.
