A Daphnis to be cherished 4 July 2011

There are a slew of "Best of.." albums out there and Ravel has quite a few devoted to him. Where this one stands out is the "Daphnis..." Suite #2 and "La Valse". These two recorded by Zubin Mehta and the LA Philharmonic are among my desert island selections. I have waited for years for the vinyl to be converted to CD and it took Decca's Australian arm to finally do it. Both are brilliant and warm, sensuous and exciting. The "Daphnis..." has the added attraction of including the wordless chorus. I have many of these on CD and none come so close to perfection as these two.

The other works are fine; "Mother Goose" is just the 5 movement suite and "Bolero", while exciting,...well it is just another "Bolero".

The disc, as a filler, adds Monteux's LSO recording of the "Rapsodie Espagnole". A fine account but nothing spectacular.

This CD's rating gets an average rating of 4.5 stars: 5 for the "Daphnis..." and "La Valse"; 3 stars for the "Rapsodie..." and 4 stars for the "Mother Goose" and "Bolero".
