Biography

Power Station was a 1980s supergroup made up of singer Robert Palmer, bassist John Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, and former Chic drummer Tony Thompson. Bernard Edwards, also of Chic, was involved on the studio side as recording producer. For a short time he also functioned as Power Station's manager. The band was formed in New York City late in 1984 during a break in Duran Duran's… Read more in Amazon's The Power Station Store

By Smitty Werbenjaegermanjensen (real name) TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this as I wanted to get hold of some of the first Power Station album and was curious as to the nature of the bonus tracks. I should have just got the first album on its own.

Power Station were a sort of power pop rock band. Great crunchy riffs and an airtight rhythm section. I recommend them fully to anyone who wants to hear a different approach to rock music. Robert Palmer was a peerless singer possed of an outstanding voice and a great way with a lyric. Tony Thompson is a top line drummer, capable of full on rock to outright funky. John and Andy Taylor, bass and guitar respectively, were on a break from Duran Duran and play the music here with total commitment and impress.

With the exception of Taxman, a cover of the Beatles song, and Dancing in the Street the material comes from the first Power Station album. Get it On(Bang a Gong), a Trex cover, is wonderful as is Some Like it Hot, worth getting hold of at some stage.

The weakest tracks are the bonus/rare tracks. The worst offender being a live version of Dancing in the Streets which is easily the worst version of this song that I have ever heard, due to the band using "singer" Micheal des Barres following Roberts departure from the band.

So if you are after some Power Station and have none at the moment get either of their albums The Power Station or Living in Fear, both highly recommended, Living in Fear being more consistent. Give this a miss, unless you are an outright completist.

I'm not sure who this is supposed to appeal to... 26 Dec 2004
By V. M. Fay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First off, let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the original two Power Station albums (The Power Station and the sadly overlooked Living In Fear). Andy & John Taylor of Duran Duran put together a side project that really kicked some ass, and proved once and for all that they really could play. It's dance music, but the most rockin' dance music ever recorded. But, the band only recorded two albums, so a compilation is completely unneccesary, especially since the second album didn't feature any hits (despite the fact that in many ways it featured better songs). So, if you just wanted a collection of hits by this band, then pick up the first album. But this compilation throws in a couple of rare tracks, which would really only appeal to fans of the band. But if you already own the first two albums, then you are spending money really on three songs.

Regardless, if you are fan of Duran Duran or The Power Station, then just wait for the new deluxe edition of the first album. It will feature at least two of the rare tracks from this album (don't know if the live track will be included, but that wouldn't be much of a loss, since it features Michael Des Barres on vocals, because Robert Palmer refused to tour with the band), along with a bonus dvd. And if you're a casual fan of eighties music, you are much better off buying a compilation cd of eighties songs that feature Some Like It Hot or Bang A Gong...since those are the only two songs many people care about anyway.

This really only would appeal to someone who was told that The Power Station were great, and are curious. Other than that, don't waste your money.

Why bother? 11 Aug 2005
By Warhorse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This collections gives you 7 of the 8 tracks from the 1985 Power Station album - at that rate, just buy that album. Moreover, it only features one track from the much better 1996 Power Station album 'Living in Fear'.
I'd only recommend getting this if you are really keen on getting the other tracks not found on either album.
But basically you might as well get the first album to get most the songs found here and get Living in Fear to get all the ones missing from here.

The best of (but only from the 1st album) ! 18 Dec 2003
By olivier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The Power Station was a side project for Duran Duran's John & Andy Taylor. Together with the late Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson, they formed this supergroup in 1985 and recorded an album which featured 2 US top 10 hits ("Some like it hot" + T-Rex's "Get it on").
Palmer left the Power Station shortly after to go on solo but in 1996, he re-formed the band for a second album "Living in fear" which failed to chart.
This low-budget collection concentrates on the 1st album. The only track from "Living in fear" included here is the cover of George Harrison's "Taxman".
3 tracks make the CD worth purchasing : a previously unreleased live version of "Dancing in the street" and dub versions of "Communication" and "Heat is on".
