To most people, The Icicle Works may stir vague memories of Love is a Wonderful Colour from the early 80s but this CD shows how much more there was to the band. Early classics like Hollow Horse are mixed with newer material such as Evangeline, Who do you want for your love? and the marvellous Understanding Jane, the track that first drew the band to my attention - I remember Lemmy raving about on Radio 1's Roundtable. Best track, though, is the new mix of When it all comes down - still one of my favourite all-time songs. Since the band split, Ian McNabb has produced some great solo stuff and Chris Sharrock has drummed for The Lightning Seeds, World Party, The La's and, currently, Robbie Williams but nothing will beat the strength of these tracks. Check it out and rediscover one of the most neglected bands of the 1980s.

I first come across this Liverpudlian 3 piece appearing live on the tube back in the early eighties, performing their one and only hit song 'Love is a wonderful colour' and i was instantly hooked.

The music scene on Merseyside at the time was flavour of the month with the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen.Tear Drop Explodes and OMD going strong but Ian McNabb and the boys didn't quite fit in and their music was often lost on the listening public meaning commercial success was in short supply.

The Icicle Works music was a mixed bag of pop, rock, heavy guitars to soft ballads and even the most avid of followers weren't sure what to expect next, even McNabb admits trying to listen to this cd in one go would do your'e head in.

4 studio albums arrived between 1982 and 1988 and here on this 'best of' we find 4 tracks from each and the sheer breadth of music McNabb was to make is commendable proving that in time one could look back to his work as being vastly underated.

Just to give some indication of my taste in music,i am a fan of the likes of Keane,Coldplay,U2,Simple Minds ect and this particular cd[i have the version with the bonus disc of rare material and b sides] doesn't look out of place alongside them.

This was so frustrating, my cassette copy finaly chewed up and was presented to the great wow and flutter god so I bought the CD copy and noticed that something was missing, only my favorite track: Like Weather! WHY? I supose, in hindsight that if you never knew that track existed then the CD stands up on it's own merit but the loss of Like Weather from the cassette version to me i8s a serious omsion - that track gave me a love of world music and in a way influenced me over the last twenty years of music buying. The rest of the CD is well worth buying even if you only remember 'Love is a Wonderful Colour or Evangeline. They should have been huge!

How on earth this band didn't become global stars is quite beyond me.

Ian McNabb was one (is one) of the most talented songwriters of the 80's/90's and remains as important today as when he played in one of the finest three piece bands in history. Big statements, but within this greatest hits collection you'll find lots and lots of evidence to back this up.

Each and every track is a stonewall classic. There is variety, depth, some rocky stuff (Understanding Jane), indie in the shape of Love is a Wonderful Colour and Birds Fly and just so much more. The ode to the Liverpool dockers has a resonance that would make the bluest politician stand up and listen.

So what do you download?

Well, each and every review of this record gives 5 stars, not just because we're all fans, because this is a band that absolutely deserves your attention, not from a nostalgic perspective, but as a music fan who's sought this out. Why not buy the entire album and become a better person.

Listening to all the old tracks brought back some fond memories through the mists of time. This cruelly underrated band never failed to disappoint and crafted some of the most poignant lyrics/melodies of that era. Delve into their back-catalogue and you wont be disappointed...

I stumbled across this band while listening to some bizarre radio show one day back in the mists of time. Thought the song was brilliant, and ended up going to an independent record shop (showing my age) to buy it.
Absolutely amazing band, and really should have had better recognition. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

This album is definitely a blast from the past, early 80's and brings back many memories for me. Well worth the purchase and high on my play list.

One of the most underrated bands,I remember I saw them years ago in Colchester(I think) and I fell in love with the band. They reminded me of a rockier version of the Walker Brothers if that makes sense.Sound like a muso now,but Ialways thought they used to have the best "middle eight" parts of their songs ever. I used to have this cd but lent it to somebody but was never returned to me so had to get it again. Especially love the extra cd with rare stuff on, Love it
