BBC Review

Few artists embody the superclub era better than German DJ and producer Paul van Dyk. From his own E-Werk club in Berlin to Cream, Gatecrasher in its late 90s heyday and the pleasure palaces of Ibiza, if there was a forest of hands and glowsticks in the air in the late 1990s it was a fair bet that he or one of his records was on the decks. Whether the sugar rush pleasures afforded by commercial trance are substantial enough to justify a three-disc best of is a riskier proposition, and on the evidence of this album the answer is 'no'.

Van Dyk might be a fondly remembered throwback for those who have long since mothballed their day-glo clubwear, but in fact he's never been away. He was even voted best DJ in the world in the DJ Magazine's influential annual poll as recently as 2005. His five studio albums are all represented here, with the majority of tracks coming from the most successful of them, 1996's Seven Ways and 2000's Out There And Back.

Disc one, featuring van Dyk's own productions, is presented as a mix, which means you don't have to sit through minutes of DJ-friendly unadorned kick drum intros and outros, but also draws attention to the monotonous uniformity of his sound. Make no mistake, this is a proper sausage factory of a mix: one banger after another. Of those bangers, however, a couple stand out from the crowd. The PvD 09 remix of For An Angel might be boilerplate trance but 1998's E-Werk Mix has a naive charm, while Tell Me Why (The Riddle) benefits from the cool dispassion of Sarah Cracknell's vocal.

The two discs of remixes feature big names from rock and pop as well as the dance scene, but while the voice of Justin Timberlake or Bono might differentiate these tracks, Van Dyk's musical bedding tends to remain the same: echoing bass stabs, arpeggiated synth lines and a throbbing 303. Best of the lot is 1998's Love Mix of Humate's early trance classic Love Stimulation, but that's chiefly due to the strength of the original. Fans won't complain, but those unswayed will surely remain so. --Chris Power

PvD is a trance legend, there's no getting away from that. And because we are presented with his greatest hits, it was always going to be a good album, just because quite simply, his music is good.
However, I must make a couple of points to the unsuspecting buyer. First of all, we don't quite get the 'best' versions of all of PvD's classic tracks. 'Nothing But You,' for example, lasts for less than 2 minutes on the album, which seems a bit strange. Then we get 'The Other Side' which lasts over 8.
Personally, I wish PvD had chosen all the full versions of his ultimate classics (although luckily we do get a smashing For An Angel at the end of CD01), and less on remixes. His remixing is excellent, as this album proves, although from a personal point of view I dislike the remixes he has made to 'commerical' songs, by the likes of Timberlake and Spears. Some buyers will probably prefer these tracks to any other, but if you love pure-cut trance music, I doubt these will be for you.
On the flip side, there are some sensational remixes of songs from the likes of Members of Mayday, Lisa Miskovsky and The Thrillseekers. It's basically just down to what you're in to.
Personally, I would like to have seen 2 albums of PvD and 1 of remixes, with these remixes not including commerical pop songs, but this is just my taste.
Buy it trance fans, because it is PvD. However this only just scrapes a 4 star rating - his legendary status probably prevented it from being any lower.

This compilation of some of the fun hits by Paul Van Dyk are very good. This compilation contains 24 enjoyable and unique eurodance songs that were assembled with care. I love how he brilliantly started the cd collection with the very upbeat "For An Angel"(PVD Remix 2009), and ended the first cd with "Time of Our Lives" (US Radio Edit). Paul also did a very good job with the way that he ended the second cd by starting cd two with "What Goes Around"(PVD Club Mix) by Justin Timberlake, and he ended it with "Gimme More"(also a strong club mix by Paul himself) by Britney Spears. For the second cd I have to say it was cleverly organized (with the songs that started and ended cd two) because both are good songs, and they are buy two musicians that were once boyfriend and girlfriend (as many people already know Britney and Justin use to date each other). I love the "Magical Moment" song and "Love Simulation" by Humate. My overall favorite song contained in this cd is "White Lies" by Paul Van Dyk featuring Jessica Sutta (many know her from her time with the Pussycat Dolls). The "White Lies" track and the musical collaboration between Paul and Jessica in this song created excellent musical harmony. The video to "White Lies" is great to watch. I feel that Jessica did a fantastic job with pouring her soul and energy into the song. Paul also did a wonderful job in the "White Lies" song carefully crafting the music to go well with it. This cd is great to add to any dance/trance collection.

You really have to be a fan of this genre to appreciate how good PVD is at producing so many faultless tracks one after the other. He has a certain way all of his own which is instantly easily recognisable. A must buy.

I think this album reflects how good Paul Van Dyk is as a producer and DJ. The update 2009 mix of for an angel sounds absolutely fantastic. Love his mix of Thrillerseekers Synesthesia. One of the best dance albums of the year and a must for any pvd fan.
