DVD Description

Turn back the clock to the 1970’s when Saturday afternoon meant one thing, and that was wrestling. With the chants of "easy, easy" and commentary by an over-excited Kent Walton, this was British sport at its best. With all the biggest and best wrestlers from the era: Jackie Pallo, Mick McManus, Les Kellett, Pat Roach, Kendo Nagasaki, Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy, prepare to be tantalised, teased and thrilled in this non-stop marathon of wrestling.

If you're of a certain age, this will bring it all back. The unmistakable dulcet tones of Kent "have a good week till next week" Walton. The two falls, two submissions or a knockout which became part of our Saturday afternoon ritual. Mick McManus, Big Daddy, Les Kellett and many others were big stars of the day and they're all here at their best. We loved some, we loathed others, but they were all part of our British Saturday afternoon that were followed by the somewhat less entertaining footy scores on World of Sport. To me, this is real wrestling. It is athletic and skillful, whilst being showbiz and comedy all rolled into one. ITV Wrestling was on our screens for over 20 years. The Americans just couldn't compete with their short lived razamataz with all that nastiness. The only gripe I have about this set, is the odd aspect ratio. It has been produced as Widescreen 16.9 for the intros but the bouts, the bit we really want to see, are squashed into a small box in the middle of a 16.9 widescreen with lots of wasted screen space caused by the letterbox effect. I would far rather have seen this as a normal television aspect the same as when it was first broadcast. I could have put up with the intros in normal aspect, there really is absolutely nothing gained by the way they have produced it. All in all though, for the money, this is a good piece of television memory lane and I am pleased to have watched it.

This one is for the true grapple fans!

A two dvd set showing wrestling as it should be: the English way. With introductions from Dickie Davies, this double dvd set features the best of British, and some exotic 'foreigners' too... See Les Kellet, Mr 'TV' Jackie Pallo, Mick McManus, Rollerball Rocco, Leon Arras (actor Brian Glover), Kendo Nagasaki, Catweazle, Big Daddy (Shirley Crabtee) and more. Even includes and interview with Jimmy Saville on his life as a semi pro wrestler.

i was sad to see wrestling disappear from the tv... it was only Wednesday night wrestling that allowed me to skip the lights out curfew of 9pm bedtime and Saturday was incomplete without World of Sport's 4pm hour of balletic, athletic and sometimes Norman Wisdomesque macho dancing from some ex Mecca ballroom or other in some miserable part of the UK.

Although we never saw Kent Walton, his voice was the stitching that held the hour together to make the splendid, golden robe that adorned the shoulders of ITVs Saturday sports coverage. Joker Les Kellett, stumbling around the ring, angry Mick McManus and his Action Man black-painted haircut, golden boy Steve Veidor, Johnny Kwango and his nutcracker headbut, Ricky Starr, Adrian Street, Masambula, The Royle Brothers... all fond, fond memories of happier times when good guys fought bad guys and the good guys usually won. Get this DVD set and teach yourself how to Boston Crab your neighbour during your next rowdy argument... enjoy watching, hanky at the ready and, to twist Kent's closing line: have a good weep, 'til next weep.
