This set represents a creditably even handed, 43 track sweep through five decades of chart toppers. The album does itself a favour by missing out any chart toppers from the last ten years that typify the 'straight-in-at-number-one with a fan base push then a plummet of 22 places on week two' pattern - caused by declining sales in the singles market. These are, at least, proper number ones in the traditional sense. Since the 1960's, when almost every Beatles single was an automatic chart topper, the best records by the greatest artists have rarely been number ones. With that fact in mind, you'd have to conclude that this album does largely represent the best that number one singles have had to offer; there's 'Good Vibrations',' Reach Out',' Maggie May',' Nothing Compares 2 U','Reet Petite' etc. - but no Beatles (permission is never granted to include their back catalogue on compilations), so you can't treat the album title as a gospel.

When I first bought this CD I was struck by the title: "The Best No. 1 Singles in the World...Ever!" My instant response was to suggest the re-phrasing of the title to: "The Best Western Music Single In the World...Ever!" The idea of making such a sweeping statement - I felt it excludes a vast array of other non-western popular music & including pop music. Despite this obvious generalisation in the title of this compilation, I found the compilation to be very balanced & evenly spread out which take you through the 5 decades from 1954 to 2001 onwards of the best No.1 Singles.

However, this collection could have included other No.1 Singles like the 1978 hit: "You're the one I want" by John Travolta /Olivia Newton-John; the 1977 hit "Mull of Kintyre/Girls' School" by Wings & the 1957 hit "Diana" by Paul Anka.

Overall, I think this includes the crucial Singles like: "Bohemian Rhapsody": Queen; "Night Fever": Bee Gees; "Good Vibrations": Beach Boys; "Maggie May": Rod Stewart; "Nothing Compares 2 U": Sinead O'Connor; "Reet Petite": Jackie Wilson and so on. The other minor point was that there was no single from the Beatles in this collection from 1963 year & at the penultimate track 22 of CD 2 - John Lennon's 1970-71 hit "Imagine" reminded the compilers of this obvious omission in this collection.

Finally, I can definitely recommend you to buy this collection which features many of the top No.1 singles from the last 5 decades!
