HASH(0x993c30f0) out of 5 stars Primitive but a must for Stewart fans 10 Dec. 2002
By James M. Shertzer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
Al Stewart's career in the U.S. peaked more than 25 years ago with his "Year of the Cat" and "Time Passages" LPs, both minor classics fusing pop, rock and jazz with sensitive, intelligent, nearly metaphysical musings on life, death and romance caught in the shuffle of time and the haze of history. Never a big, rock-arena megastar, Stewart made relatively few, scattered appearances in the states, usually in relatively small clubs. If you are a fan of those great LPs and were never able able to catch him back then, you'll enjoy this artifact from the era, primitive though it looks by today's standards. This DVD comes from a color videotape made in 1979, apparently for broadcast by a station in Bremen, Germany. Stewart never acquired the look, flash and polish required of good MTV material, and he's a little ill with at ease in front of the small crowd here in the studio. The camera crew isn't terribly creative, and the lighting is pretty amateurish (a shadow from the microphone sometimes is seen on Stewart's face) and Stewart and band look a bit rough and unkempt, in hippie clothings and hairstyles that were probably passe even back then. But the music is fairly well recorded (in two-track stereo), and the performances of these well-remembered classics (all, with one exception from the "Year of the Cat" and "Time Passages" albums) are very good and wonderful to see performed live. In some ways, the lack of technical polish in the DVD's favor - it's like having a treasured copy of a tape that might have been made if the band had shown up in those days in a club in your home town. Regrettably, it's also very short; apparently made to fit an hour TV time slot, the seven-song tape runs a brief 45 minutes.

HASH(0x993c3144) out of 5 stars An Al Stewart's Fan from CA 27 Nov. 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
I was stunt to see the DVD on the store shelf. Being Al Stewart's fan since "Year of the Cat", I bought it with great feelings. The band is "Shot in the Dark" in his '79 album "24 Carrots." The songs are well chosen, especially "The Palace of Versailles" and "Valentina Way." I enjoy watching Peter White with the guitar in "On The Border" as much as I did in Al's concert in San Francisco back in 1983. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys the sound of guitars, sax, and piano.

HASH(0x99956420) out of 5 stars More Al Stewart DVDs please.... 12 Jun. 2000

I have this DVD and loved it! It is about time that someone out there put out something to showcase Al's remarkable talent.. The Video was a little muddy in some places, but the show was still great. Time Passages and Year of the Cat are my 2 personal favs. I hope that there are more DVDs with Al Stewart soon... Good music from my childhood. Beautiful memories come back to me in these songs...

HASH(0x993c321c) out of 5 stars Enjoyable 1979 Performance by Al for German Television 20 Aug. 2002
By Lisa A. Compton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD Verified Purchase
I purchased this DVD a few years ago in anticipation of purchasing a DVD player someday. The DVD sat on a shelf until last week when it was the first DVD I played on my newly acquired DVD player.
I enjoyed the performance thoroughly. The video was satisfactory although the sound in some sections was distorted. The sound issues seemed to be mostly toward the beginning of the DVD. The DVD video quality seemed quite good to me. Since this is a reproduction of an original television broadcast, the original media was more than likely videotape, as opposed to 16 or 35mm motion picture film. The DVD quality is about what I would expect from a reproduction of a television broadcast videotape.
I wish there were more satisfactory quality visual recordings of Al's work during the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Unfortunately, everything else I have seen to date is amateurish and poor quality.
In summary, I recommend this DVD to anyone who appreciates Al's work.

HASH(0x993c32dc) out of 5 stars Great vintage Al Stewart 6 Feb. 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
This video is Al Stewart live on a German TV show in 1979 playing about seven of his best songs from the 1975-1979 period. The picture quality is pretty good and the sound is clear but a little muddy in places--remember this was a TV broadcast. The band is great and the performances sound amazingly close to the studio recordings but with more intensity.
