What this has over many, many other versions of the classic themes is the combination of the original recordings and several suites of music from individual episodes. For a television series, the music is surprisingly varied so it's not a case of 'the same two themes repeated'.

An interview with the star of the series, Peter Graves, is a nice bonus.

This contains the more well known music that appeared on the tv show, from the original show [1966-1973] to the 1980's Mission:Impossible[1988-1990]. The cd has 34 tracks. Also recommend the original Mission:Impossible albums by Lalo Schifrin "Music from ..." and "More ..." and also Lalo's "Mannix- original tv soundtrack".

HASH(0x98b72d08) out of 5 stars Excellent but incomplete! 13 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This excellent collection of tracks and stings from the series suffers from one complaint: MORE! While encompassing the major themes from both the new and old series (including the frequently neglected 1970-1973 seasons) in good quality and selection, it lacks some of the more distinctive themes from the later years of the old series (particularly egregious is that "The Killer" only has some of the themes included; the pulse-pounding climax theme is horrifyingly absent). The live recording of the Mission theme is also somewhat badly recorded. However, the Peter Graves interview is a must for any M:I fan, and this is the only place you'll get the thumping bang-boom of the excellently synthesized new series. Moreover, what themes of the old series are here, are fabulous. If you like the series, buy this album.

HASH(0x98977fa8) out of 5 stars Unmissable. 10 Jan. 2006
By Chris Knight - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Crescendo has done their usual good job in assembling this material. Unlike Lalo Schifrin's "Music from" album, which was really a "Music as originally composed for" album that in some cases bore little relation to what was used on the show, this disc was apparently made from the same tapes that went into the actual TV show soundtrack.

One interesting effect of that: The recording for the original series was done in *monaural!* So that's what this disc is, until you get to the tracks for the 90's series. Oh well.

The track lineup comprises a number of "suites" of music cues from various episodes, some short, some long. Together the tracks form a good representative sample of the actual, on-screen music of M:I over the years. Furthermore they fit together well in a sequence, leaving with you the impression that you were actually listening to a few episodes; you somehow just missed the dialog.

There is an interesting interview with Peter Graves (conducted before the execrable Tom Cruise movies) and a horribly recorded take of Lalo Schifrin conducting a symphony orchestra in the M:I theme. Both IMO are wasted track space that should have gone to more selections of authentic M:I music. Because of them, if I could have given this disc 4.5 stars, I would have; as it is, they don't detract enough to take a '5' down to a '4'.

If you were a fan of the original series -- and who wasn't? -- this disc is just too much fun not to have. There will be a run on it when the original series comes out on DVD this year. Buy it now.

HASH(0x989a2f00) out of 5 stars A sampling of the best, but... 10 Oct. 2005
By allemande - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This release is welcome because it reissues the now out-of-print GNP Crescendo title from the 1990s at a budget price. That said, one may have criticisms about both releases.

The program presented on this CD is taken from and/or inspired by the "Mission: Impossible" series which appeared first in the 1960s and was revived in the 1980s. The gems here are the first several tracks, which are Lalo Schifrin's original 1960s theme music and several underscore cues by Schifrin used in the series, including a famous one later known as "The Plot". Also of note is an interview with Peter Graves, who appeared in both "Mission: Impossible" series.

The rest of the program, though, is rather negligible. The 1980s series music consists of a re-working of the show's theme, plus various underscore cues. All are awash in keyboard synthesizers, as opposed to Lalo Schifrin's use of live musicians (in the years between the two "Mission" series, film companies dismissed their studio orchestras due to the cost of maintaining them). A few of the 1980s cues are pleasant enough, making one think at times of New Age or Space music, but overall they lack the character of those sixties delights.

A couple more notes: for no apparent reason, the disc ends with a modern arrangement of the "Mission: Impossible" theme performed by the Israel Philharmonic and conducted by Lalo Schifrin, a take-or-leave proposition. Also, be forewarned that the booklet included with this budget release is "budget" as well, consisting essentially of the covers and little else. The inner pages are missing, along with most of the notes, a likely display of contempt for the costs involved in printing the rest.

All in all, this disc is just good, not great. If you can find it for little enough money, buy it for the wonderful Lalo Schifrin music and the Peter Graves segment.

HASH(0x97fce78c) out of 5 stars Something's mission, here. 3 Nov. 2002
By Lee Hartsfeld - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I love Lalo Schifrin's music for Mission: Impossible, so I'm at a loss to explain why I find the Schifrin portion of this CD so tedious. Maybe it's because most of the tracks are variations on either the title music theme or the eight-note-mode Mission "march." Then again, music that works beautifully as background doesn't necessarily make for good listening apart from the action it's designed to underscore. I'm not sure. But it's great to have the opening and closing "title" music, though where's the revamped theme that appeared in the fifth season?
The 1988 music is a waste of CD space--thumping and crashing noises, primarily. The interview with Peter Graves is interesting, and the sound quality throughout is great. Your mission is to decide whether or not these few virtures merit a purchase.

HASH(0x98221978) out of 5 stars A rich variation of a popular score/ TV series 20 Aug. 2009
By A. G. Dharmadasa - Published on Amazon.com

If you like the 60's tv series the it's a given you will not be dissapointed by the cd. Also there is a very very ultra cool live version of the theme. Simply magic.
