5.0 out of 5 stars Written by the great minds in the game. 24 April 1999
By A Customer
This book is ideal for the judoka regardless of his/her experience. The book focuses on showing the techniques with action photos rather than on long passages of text that would bore the reader. It also contains a handy section on physical conditioning for the judoka which is essential for maximizing progress in a very physically demanding sport. The essays, at the back of the book, about the authors and Yamashita's experiences in judo are most inspirational.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money 20 Feb 2012

This is an excellent book. The photographs, despite being black and white and a little old are very good and easy enough to understand. The book is rich in detail for the advanced yet simple and well presented for beginners like me. The throws and other techniques are broken down in detail yet concise enough to not be laborious. As previously mentioned the essays included are inspirational and the section on fitness training is also very good. I'm very glad I bought this book (hardback) and am sure it will serve me well. 5.0 out of 5 stars The superlative Judo book 13 Dec 2011
This book does not include every throw, every ground technique or any katas. There are some elements of judo which are not in the book. But if I had to choose one book for a judoka to own on judo, this would be it.
The photos of perfectly executed technique will help you to understand the techniques better and do the techniques better. The section of combos will also, to put it simply, give you the tools to become a better judoka.
It was a few months before I actually went through and read the essays at the end of the book about what the spirit of judo meant to the authors, but when I did it really affected me. In the end, in the same way they were able to reduce the techniques down to the essential information with photos, these essays get right to the heart of why and how judo should be practiced.
If you practice judo, you should have this book.
