This book is ideal for the judoka regardless of his/her experience. The book focuses on showing the techniques with action photos rather than on long passages of text that would bore the reader. It also contains a handy section on physical conditioning for the judoka which is essential for maximizing progress in a very physically demanding sport. The essays, at the back of the book, about the authors and Yamashita's experiences in judo are most inspirational.

There is something here for all grades of Judoka. It is probably most useful for a relative beginner (10th - 3rd Kyu) but there are some interesting variations on techniques particular to the authors styles that even Dan grades may find instructive. This book covers the basics of judo very well then goes into a decent amount of depth on a few key moves. Techniques are clearly illustrated with lots of pictures, all well shot and expertly staged. The authors clearly explain and highlight the key movements in each technique offering useful tips and possible variations. Counter attacks and combination techniques are discussed and the authors succeed in offering real insight into the art of Judo, the mechanics of the human body and the mind of the fighter. One of the best overall Judo books around. Consider also Attacking Judo and Kodokan Judo.

This is the Bible of Judo - superb explanations and action photographs that give the reader an impression of the impetus required to carry out the techniques. Every Judoka should own one. Jamie MacDonald

This book does not include every throw, every ground technique or any katas. There are some elements of judo which are not in the book. Read more
