What an excellent book this is. All 60 of the paintings have a full colour page each. easy to follow step by step instructions are in black and white, which actually makes things easier to see and follow in many cases. I had never painted anything before, but following this book I managed to paint a really good picture first time. Incredible!

Although I agree with the previous reviewer regarding the black and white photos to a point, but I have not found them to cause a problem, I just like pretty pictures thats all.
As for it not being suitable for beginners, I shall have to respectably disagree. I am a 'painting philistine' and knew nothing about mixing paint or even the different mediums available until recently. Of all the books I have purchased (alot) this is without a doubt the easiest to follow. I have also found that this goes along with his series very well (twice daily on one of the satalite channels, I forget which. Go through your a-z guide etc). They can seem repetative, but this just helps reaffirm his technique and it is fascinating to see a masterpiece appear in 30 minutes.

I could not believe on my first try some of his genius was appearing on the canvass, this has given me a major confidence boost and when I have fully mastered it, I intend to turn professional.
Also I have to say that I was gutted to find out that my new mentor had been savagely and cruelly torn from this world in 1995 by cancer. A sad loss of life, but what a life. I will not be surprised if his name drifts into legend along with all the other greats and that in a thousand years every artist will know of The Ross technique, even if they don't use it. Lets face it, not everyone wants to paint like old Vince (and as far as I know Bob didn't have a penchant for removing body parts either).

My advice is; Buy a book by a legend!

An excellent insight into the technique and style of Bob Ross. Seeing the tv series first would be advantageous, however the step by step instructions are easy to follow and the end results inspiring.

Thanks Bob you made it so easy for me to start painting, I enjoy it so much that when I have finished one I just want to paint another and your books are such an inspiration, some pictures to copy and may to give ideas so that you can create 'your own world'. I was shocked to find that Bob passed away in 1995, I hope his son will carry on in his fathers footsteps and help us all improve and aspire to be as good as Bob.
