4.0 out of 5 stars i t v wrestling returns, 17 May 2006
By J. Scrimshaw "you ai'nt heard it til you hear... (nottingham United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
hello again grapple fans i t v wrestling has at last returned with another release on dvd. I have to say this one is better than the offering from last year as its not so much centered around haystacks and daddy but the other favourites includeing les kellit who we saw last time, the british bulldog appearing here as young david aged just 16 and one of my favourites king kendo nagasaki. Once again its world of sports own dickie davis hosting. If its so good why only four stars? well simply because yet again granada are giving us very rushed matches mear highlights of the wrestling action when complete matches are avaleable elsewhere on dvd although not as widely as this release. Still a great effort hope to see more releases like it. Big moments? Well it has to be giant haystacks back elbowing m c brian crabtree accidentaly whilst gestureing at big daddy aka the fat fraud hillarious! anyway so long fight fans til next time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing, 6 Jun 2009
By Roger (Colchester) - See all my reviews
ITV, Saturday afternoon - the much-loved wrestling that at one time was a `must' for many of us. It's hard to think that any review of a DVD of those days can be negative but, sadly, this DVD disappointed me.

If you think you are going to enjoy a selection of bouts in full, or even part, you will be disappointed. This is simply a run through various wrestlers of the time using the alphabet as a peg-board, with only a few moments' clip of each. True, most of the well-loved wrestlers are present, but short sequences hardly do justice to them. Kendo Nagasaki, for instance, isn't even in action; his clip is of his `ceremonial unmasking'. And seeing short bursts of Big Daddy, Haystacks and Mick McManus simply left me wanting full contests.

Perhaps most disappointing of all, the emphasis is more on the theatrical rather than the skill and power of the wrestlers. Of course, it WAS theatrical, but there were some exciting and legendary clashes as well - this made it seem quite tame and at times like a load of overweight actors performing pantomime.

Still, anything which helps relive those days can't be bad, so it gets 4 stars. If you're starved of those days it's worth seeing but don't raise your hopes too high; I'd trade this pageant for a couple of full bouts.
