Formed in London during 1982, Sex Gang Children's original line-up consisted of vocalist Andi Sex Gang, guitarist Terry Macleay, drummer Rob Stroud, and bassist Dave Roberts. Their first release was a live cassette entitled "Naked", which went to #15 on the UK Independent Chart. This was followed by more live performances and the "Beasts" EP (which charted at #8) and ... These guys were as ground breaking and experimental as contemporaries such as Bauhaus and Virgin Prunes, but for me at least they were much stronger song writers. Take the full length version of "Mauritia Mayer" for example, which shows a depth to their musicianship and a quality of recording that stills sounds fresh and original today.

The only thing that some people may not warm to is Andi Sex Gang's distinctive vocal style - I'd suggest checking out a few YouTube clips of songs such as Sebastiane first. If that whets your appetite, then this is the compilation to buy. It's everything the first incarnation of the band put out, and surpasses anything that the later line ups produced.

I love this cd. Though some of the songs have been remixed, slightly to the original songs. It is a punk era type music, with some swearing. If you like the group Baushaus, you might enjoy this cd. I would definately buy this cd again. 10/10 for delivery, service etc,.

A great compilation 22 July 2005
By Dean Dirge - Published on Amazon.com

Many Sex Gang Children compilations are available, including Shout and Scream/The Legends Collection, Fall, Execution and Elegance, and Dark Archives. In my opinion, The Hungry Years overshadows them all. The Hungry Years wisely focuses on the output of the original (and, arguably, the best) lineup of Sex Gang Children. Nearly every track they recorded is an underground classic.

For those readers unfamiliar with the sound of Sex Gang Children, I will compare them to a combination of Theatre of Hate, Bauhaus and early Adam and the Ants (with a little bit of Virgin Prunes strangeness thrown in the mix). At the same time, I will maintain that, like these other bands, Sex Gang Children is totally unique. It is raw and raucous, with shrieking guitars, booming drums, haunting basslines and fractured lyrics. Andi Sexgang's voice sounds like a cross between Adam Ant and Marc Bolan. The producers often use reverb and other studio effects to create an almost hallucinogenic effect.

My only complaint about The Hungry Years is that the few remaining tracks from this era (such as Who on Earth Could That Be? and Kill Machine) weren't included. Perhaps there wasn't enough room on the disc, but I would have suggested spreading out the material between two discs.

If you want to get into the original incarnation of Sex Gang Children beyond the scope of this compilation, purchase Song and Legend (their only album), Deiche (a collection of early singles and remixes) and Empyre and Fall (another collection of remixes, originally released as Re-enter the Abyss). There will still be a few odds and ends to track down, such as Children's Prayer and Mauritia Mayer, but that's where a good compilation like The Hungry Years comes in. I also recommend these works by Andi Sexgang: Blind (later marketed as a SGC album!), God on a Rope and Last of England.

By the way, don't forget that the only places you can find Oh Funny Man and the Andi Sexgang/Marc Almond collaboration, The Hungry Years (mysteriously absent from the compilation named after the song), are The Whip compilation and Shout and Scream/The Legends Collection.

ahh..and as for ms. rosa, or anybody else, who does not own the original vinyl and/or can not understand what andi sex gang is singing in the great 'sebastian'...this is for YOU! : "sister tell, wishing well to the young man dead on the shore she said die, a suicide, kiss the table in god's name.. it's the code of the cowboy men to defile all that is pure too much hate, too much hate, and your ignorance is your strength! don't sell us brittanica with it's oozing pipeline dreams eat your children baked in a pie. i will blind you to improve your vision of i.. sebastian... bite the face of piety kiss your mother's broken spirit. there is nothing, not even shame, just a stench from the room full of social animals.. caught again, jezebel, with your friend and his beauty bible. he once walked thru sacred lands, now he waves his nazi dagger.. sebastian... wishing well, sebastian with your smiling puritan youth. and you feel, feel no pain as they cut thru your bluey-green vein!"
not too bad typing from memory, eh? i'm sure a mistake here or there. one of my absolute favourites along with 'beasts' which is also found on this compilation. so, what are you waiting for? take it from this old deathrocker and BUY IT NOW! ...SEX-GANG FOREVER.

GREAT CD! 30 Dec 1999

OK, first off this is NOT Christian music, why would anyone even THINK that?
If you have never listened to Sex Gang Children, then this is FOR SURE the album to start off with. Maurita Mayer really sets the pace for the CD, as it is by far the best song they have EVER done. Sebastiane is good too, but you can't understand ANYTHING Andy Sex Gang is saying, and it's that way through the whole album.
My musical tastes include Christian Death, Bauhaus, Shadow Project, Thrill Kill Kult, This Mortal Coil, and The Legendary Pink Dots, so if you are into any of those bands, give Sex Gang Children a whirl, you will not be dissapointed.
If you only had one SGC CD, this should be it! 6 Jun 2014

FABULOUS compilation. I could listen to this all day long. Makes me seriously miss my former clubbing days. A lot of the later Cleopatra releases and compilations are hit and miss, so if you're new to Sex Gang Children, this is a great one to start with. My favourite tracks are Mauritia Mayer, Cannibal Queen and German Nun.
Best SGC Comp. 11 Dec 2013

This is the best SGC comp! Not too digital sounding. The bass & volume are balanced... You can hear the original analog recordings, even though it is on CD. I had this CD 15 years ago but had lost it. So glad to have it back.
