This review is from: The Best of Holly Cole (Audio CD)
For those of you yet to experience the wonderful Holly Cole this is by far and away the best place to start. Unlike other 'Best Of..' compilations by other artists who pad this type of cd with questionable material this cd is a true showcase of her talents. With no fillers to make up the right number of tracks , you will hear Canadas best at her best. This is how Jazz should be sung , the original songs are taken , deconstructed and then reconstructed with such skill and verve that you wonder how people liked the originals! You may guess that i am quite a fan and there is even something on the cd for us completist collectors. The only way to hear better is to take in one of her concerts and we cant all be that lucky.

Canada has produced many great female singers (Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, Terri Clark, Diana Krall and Shania Twain to name a few) but Holly Cole (from Nova Scotia, like Anne Murray) while completely different from any of them, is outstanding in her own way. Holly's first love is jazz, but she has absorbed musical influences from many different genres. This shows in her music, which is jazz-based, but with everything else added into the mix.Holly specialises in cover versions, but always takes the songs apart and rearranges them in such a way as to sound original. I've heard plenty of rearranged covers by many different singers, but it is rare to find somebody who does it with such consistency. Listen to her version of I've just seen a face (the Beatles song) or I can see clearly now (the Johnny Nash song, which has been covered by lots of people, but never quite like Holly's version). This is my first Holly CD, but certainly not my last. I now regard her recent Christmas collection (Baby it's cold outside) as essential. I'm intrigued to hear what Holly can do with songs which, brilliant though they are, desperately need something different done to them.

The tricky part about reviewing this album is that ostensibly there is nothing wrong but at the same time its not the sort of CD you play and then think, "wow!"Holly Cole falls into the same trap as most other female jazz vocalists in that she has a fantastic voice and the production is very smooth put you can't help but think that if they put a little more effort in they could really swing and produce something phenomenal. But, having said all that, there are some cracking tunes on this album, not least the wonderful "Make It Go Away" which is worth the price of the CD by itself. "God Will" is another example of Lyle Lovett's song writing prowess and "I Can See Clearly Now" almost sounds like it was written for Holly's voice. If you like Diana Krall and soft, soulful jazz then you can't go wrong with this, but if you're after something extra which takes your emotions here, there and everywhere then look for it in the sales. This is a nice album to have but it won't burn out the stylus on your record player.
