This book was misleadingly titled. It is made up primarily of excerpts from letters to the author about various breeds of chicken (often just random anecdotes that don't really speak to the issue of a breed's pros and cons/needs and attributes). It just isn't very helpful in choosing the best breed of chicken for you.
For example, I wanted to see what the book would say about common breeds such as Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, and Australorps. Well, the anecdotes included just didn't address the questions those new to poultry would have. It didn't help me at all to get any closer to choosing a breed.
The book was a pleasant, quick read-- it's a very small book. It just didn't deliver in terms of content, and was expensive for what it offers. If you are trying to choose "the best hens for you", try one of these books: "Choosing and Keeping Chickens", "Storey's Guide to Poultry Breeds" or the smaller-format Storey "Pocketful of Poultry".
