Finally! 26 Feb. 2011

I will save the song by song review for somebody with more time to kill. I just want to say that after waiting five years for a new Danielson album I was a bit nervous that this was not going to live up to my unrealistic expectations. Crisis averted! This is a fantastic album. It mixes the layered and complex production of 'ships' with the DIY ethos of every Danielson (or variation thereof) album that preceded it. What you get is a beatuful, well-produced album with just enough quirky down home feel to draw you in. It has been a long time between albums but it was worth the wait.
Every good band will try to stretch themselves... 17 May 2011

Danielson... as a band that has been around for what... sixteen years (YIKES!!) I'd say they'd be about due to fall into a rut. Fortunately "Best of Gloucester County" is not a "rut album" and like each Danielson album this one has a life of it's own. Of course it is recognizably Danielson but Daniel Smith like every good artist adds new wrinkles to every album. Like People's Partaya... Danielson... and salsa? Then There's "Olympic Portions" or "Hovering Above That Hill" with layers of surrealistic vocals on top of primal drum beats on top of a steady bed of guitars (okay it's kind of sixties but it works for them). I know some people don't like it when a band experiments or changes but I'm happy about this little experiment (just imagine if the Beatles never moved on from their 50's pop style... "You say you want a revolution yeah, yeah yeah?"). Honestly I'm kind of torn when it comes to early Danielson albums (which was a very hyper and free fun style) compared to the tighter more structured and layered later albums... but that's the awesome thing about this band that with every album they always leave you with the lingering expectation of I want to see where they go from here... In conclusion... "Best of Gloucester County"... one more stride to the Best of Danielson...
Great Album 1 April 2011

Best of Gloucester County is a great album and the group really sounds like an actual band on it. I give it one less star than Ships because that album was so ambitious and huge. That seems fair.
