Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

At the end of the century, as growing legions of young people traded in their pint glasses in favour of martinis and manhattans, record companies competed to release the perfect cocktail party soundtrack. Following the massive success of the lackluster Music To Watch Girls By, it fell to The Best "Kings & Queens Of Cool" Album In The World...Ever! to provide a truly exceptional overview of the whole "easy listening" vibe. 54 tracks spread across two CDs, Kings & Queens Of Cool manages to avoid filler, with the likes of Dean Martin, Nat "King" Cole, Andy Williams, Tom Jones and Nancy Sinatra all providing a number of classic tracks. Even Nancy's dad, Frank, appears with his daughter for a duet on "Somethin' Stupid", although this is the only track to feature the former leader of the Rat Pack. Still, though, as a taster for the cocktail set, this compilation is one of the best you'll find. --Ted Kord

Somehow a lot of the 60's, cocktail-lounge, exotica revival has focused on bizarre stereophonic effects records, not what was really being played on the radio in the 60's by stations who weren't playing rock. And the swing revival was a lot of nouveau swing stuff that was watered down compared to the real thing. Now comes this great compilation -- which cuts a slice of (largely 60's) nostalgia/pop/easy listening that is so very corny it really is the ultimate of cool. Somehow, other nostalgic looks at this era have missed these songs (at least in my collection!). The compilers really did a brilliant job of picking the best of the lot -- there was a lot of pretty awful stuff done by many these same artists at this time. Had they been 10% less selective, this album would be unlistenable, but they got it just right! Buy it, put it on, chill out.

Excellent album for house parties, which will appeal to any age group. Put it on at your party and listen to everybody singing along - they'll know every track! Some 'odd choices' (e.g. Glen Campbell, Scott Walker) which detract from the "swing" feel, but you can always skip over these. A really "feel good" album, which your friends will want to borrow for their parties. Do them a favour and buy it for them for Christmas.

first the not so good news;- no Ella Fitzgerald, no Frank Sinatra (except one duet), a mild obsession with James Bond themes and some slightly strange selections (Gene Kelly, Judy Garland etc.) which don't necessarily sit comfortably with the feel of the other selections. Luckily, the good news is overwhelming;- Nat Cole, Dean Martin, Julie London, Doris Day etc., etc., singing their best known tunes as only they knew how. If you appreciate these artists and their craft, this is a CD you won't stop listening to in a hurry. Excellent.
