Book Description

1 Sep 2011 Collector's Library
Fairy tales are the simplest and purest expressions of the collective unconscious and thus offer the clearest understanding of the basic patterns of the human psyche. Folk tales and fairy stories were originally intended for both adults and children and this collection brings together two great European traditions in "Grimms' Household Tales" and "The Best Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen". From the far north-west of Europe comes Joseph Jacob's anthology "Celtic Fairy Tales" while ancient Greek culture is represented by "Aesop's Fables" from south-east Europe. It is illustrated by well-known artists including Arthur Rackham.

1.0 out of 5 stars THEY LEAVE OUT THE COLORED PICTURES!!! 12 Jan 2012

In spite of the colorful box these books come in---BEWARE! For all those who love Arthur Rackham's work they are a great disappointment. First of all the Aesop's Fables and the Grimms' Fairy Tales both omit the colored pictures in other copies of these books (by other publishers). And the pages are so small that, although that might be a positive for little hands, it ends up making the delicate and striking pictures of Rackham's look less splendid than they should. A better source for these illustrations (which include the color plates) is Sixty Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, published as a reproduction of the 1912 edition by Crown Publishers and Aesop's Fables published by Avenel Books (also a facsimile of a 1912 edition). SO PLEASE, don't let your child be introduced to Rackham by amateurs. Go for these other books and enjoy! I have yet to develop any notions about the other two books but their illustrations are also all only black and white and much too small.
