I used to buy Private Eye mainly for Dear Bill column which carried spoof letters from the late Denis Thatcher to the equally late Bill Deedes. This book contains the best of these columns and very funny they are too. Drinking friends, gaffes, dodgy enterprises by fictional dodgy friends and an eternal programme of attempting to escape the eagle eye of Prime Minister and other Half Margaret Thatcher, feature heavily. the period covered by these notes between Denis and Bill cover the era of the miners strike, the Falklands War and the introduction of various plans by cabinet members.

So well written are these letters that you have to remind yourself that it's all a work of fiction. It must have been difficult choosing which of the Dear Bill letters should go into the collection. I always hoped that Private Eye would release the Complete Dear Bill but I imagine it's a bit late for that by now.

Laughout loud funny, and although a knowledge of the politics of the early 1980s helps, because much of this is the imagined anecdotes of Denis Thatcher, it is not vital. Of the various Private Eye publications, by far the best.

If only Denis was stiil around to give his pungent personal views of the politicians and their policies ,of today, I doubt any of them would escape his scathing pen and would well deserve such treatment . Read this if you are unihibited about laughing out loud in public or in private

By today's sensibility the book can be quite robust in its description of foreigners, the unemployed, sober folk and homosexuals but it is a hoot.
