I had to re-buy this album, back in 92-93 this was the first ever CD I bought with my pocket money (7 year old at the time) :)

I loved it then, and love it now!!

Another review noted the mix of what we know as 'dance' or 'club' classic tunes and straight up pop, but the tracks date from 1987 to 1993, which was a time of massive shift in music.
There's always that issue about the difference between popular and cool, but there are some copper-bottomed 'classics' of late 80s-early 90s dance here: Big Fun, Deee-Lite, Black Box, Technotronic, Rozalla, M/A/R/R/R/S, S-Express, Utah Saints, KLF. I thought most of the poppy stuff was at the good end of the spectrum: Sister Sledge, Chaka Khan, CE CE Peniston, Sydney Youngblood even if it's not 'dance' as we came to understand it [or maybe I'm showing my age and reflecting pub nights rather than club nights!] There are some tunes that jar a bit 20 years on, but not too many.
Virgin did another 'Best Dance Album In The World...Ever' around 2000 and some of the tracks here made it to the new compilation, so they do have staying power and some would still be floor fillers if the DJ dropped them now.
I bought this in yet another charity shop sweep, for 99p, so I have no complaints at that price.

The thing to remember here is that in 1993 'dance' music was simply music to dance to. Even though many classics such as 'Ride On Time' by Black Box and 'Pump Up the Jam' by Technotronic are on here, so are a bizarre selection of disco-y ones, such as Chakra Khan and Sister Sledge. The old skool theme is also broken away from 2 Unlimited and The Shamen by artists like Kenny Thomas and American hip hop house like Kriss Kross, while others just don't seem to fit in ('Temptation' by Heaven 17?). At the time, this sort of compilation of techno, soul, disco and house would probably have been very popular, but today it just seems a little confusing as to where this compilation is trying to go.

Title says it all. Great dance period late eighties, early nineties. It could have only been better with the likes of Baby D, Let Me Be Your Fantasy and Strike, U Sure Do.

My favourite compilation album.

I bought this album on tape when it first came out and played it to death - literally! I came across it by accident and bought it for old time's sake and it doesn't disappoint. I do a lot of walking and it's particularly good to listen to when doing activity as the beat makes me walk faster!
