Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

CD Description
'The Best Damn Thing' is the third album from Canadian pop rocker Avril Lavigne. Produced by Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson),Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) and her husband, Sum 41 member Deryck Whibley, Lavigne has continued with the unique mix of pop, rock and punk that helped her carve out a career as the missing link between girl pop and frat boy punk rock. The single 'Girlfriend' is also included.

3.0 out of 5 stars Censorship, 17 April 2007
By Simon Carter (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not a bad album, but be warned, this is a censored version. In order to get the explicit version you have to pay a few pounds more and get the "special edition". I'm not the world's biggest fan of unnecessary profanity, but I find silence in the middle of lyrics annoying.

Just be aware of this fact...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Is The Best Damn Thing..., 14 Jul 2007
By A. Lucas "Lobsterboy" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Girlfriend - Great lyrics and a fantastic start to the album. I promise that you will be singing along to this song within minutes. 9/10

I Can Do Better - Possibly the worst song on the album, sounds a lot like Girlfriend. However the song is still catchy and isn't one that you need to skip through. 7/10

Runaway - Reminds me a lot of the old Avril songs, great chorus and verses. 10/10

The Best Damn Thing - I love the way the lyrics just flow in this song and how Avril sings about how happy she and how her "Cinderella story scene" has come true. 10/10

When You're Gone - The most beautiful song i've heard in a long time, the lyrics are really truthful and are sung perfectly. MUST HEAR! 10/10

Everything Back But You - Good upbeat song which follows perfectly lifting the album after When You're Gone. 8/10

Hot - Hailed as one of the greatest songs on the album, I beg to differ there are much better songs on this album. However it is still brilliant :D 9/10

Innocence - Made me cry! 10/10

I Don't Have To Try - Another fantastic song that keeps the album going from strength to strength. Lyrics are a bit poor compared to other songs but excellent nonetheless. 9/10

One Of Those Girls - I love the verses on this song, really good hooks :D 9/10

Contagious - My favourite song on the album, shame it isn't longer. 10/10

Keep Holding On - This song brings a nice clean ending to the album and finishes perfectly. 9/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Pom Pom Power !, 21 April 2008
By The Wolf (uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Mrs. Wolf watches me from the kitchen. As she stands by the
oven basting the piglet I can see that she is wearing what I
have come to call her "Turn-It-Down" face...

...and then the sting in the tale (tail?) :

"Aren't You A Bit OLD To Be Listening To This ?"

Well crikey ! ...erm, probably Yes but then again categorically NO !

AND YET !...How, after this, will I be able I look at myself
squarely in the mirror, having recently written less than loving
reviews for both Mr Oldfield's and Mr Reznor's most recent releases
and even begin to hope that my humble opinion might continue
to contain even the smallest grain of credibility ?

Well...it's like this - I love Miss Lavigne's new album
and I don't give a hoot who knows it !

2004's 'Under My Skin', with it's black and white photography
and somewhat darker sound than her dizzy 2002 debut 'Let Go',
seemed to be saying "OK People Time To Take Me Seriously".

No harm in that ... It was a damn fine second album.

With 'The Best Damn Thing' we discover a raucous return
to the simple, explosive pink/punk/pop formula at which she excels.

12 marvelously mindless tracks !
Simple - Yes; Formulaic - Yes; Cliched - Yes ...
...but with enough energy to keep a major league baseball team in
hotdogs, beer and cheerleaders for at least two seasons !

Brevity and economy work to Ms Lavigne's advanatage in every way.
'I Can Do Better' and the almost Mockney 'Everything Back But You'
really thrash along.
'Girlfriend' and 'The Best Damn Thing' have the kind of killer hooks
that always make me laugh out loud and (blush) sing along.

"Let Me Hear You Say Hey Hey Hey !"
"Hey! Hey! Hey!"
"Alright ! Now Let Me Hear You Say Hey Hey Ho !"
"Hey! Hey! Ho!"

( Pom Poms Optional! )

Nothing lasts long enough for boredom ever to rear it's ugly head.
The perfect sountrack for an X Box, attention-deficit generation.

The pace slows down a tad for 3 tracks: 'When You're Gone',
'Innocence' and 'Keep Holding On'; all wave-your-lighter-in-the-air
power ballads and nothing wrong with that either.
( I mean - If 'Innocence' made "Lobsterboy" cry then it's
sure as hell good enough for me too !)

Scatty and Grits (the cubs) have just come in from school
and are already dancing about with wild abandon.

They usually take my side in moments like this.

Mrs Wolf is still frowning so I guess that's all three
of us in the doghouse.

... but that roasting piglet is beginning to smell really good !
