52 carols sung by 7 English choirs - brilliant,
By Peter Durward Harris "Pete the music fan" (Leicester England) - See all my reviews (No. 1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Best Carols Album in the World...Ever (Audio CD)
If you love Christmas carols, you will find this to be a real treasure trove. This double-CD is compiled from various Christmas albums recorded by English choirs. Between them, they seem to have included every famous carol and a lot of obscure ones. The seven choirs are the choir of King's college (Cambridge), the Bach Choir (London), the Clare College singers (Cambridge), the Temple Church choir (London), the Taverners choir, the Midiaevel Baebes and the Huddersfield choral society. A brief history of each is included in the liner notes. Some of these carols are world famous including Hark the herald angels sing, The first noel, O little town of Bethlehem, Away in a manger, Silent night, Joy to the world, We three kings and O come all ye faithful. Some others are famous in Britain but (judged on what I've seen of American Christmas albums) are not especially well known in America. These include While shepherds watched, Once in Royal David's city, In the bleak midwinter and The holly and the ivy. I have come across American covers of these songs - but not often (and I buy a lot of American music). There are yet other songs which are obscure even to me, but it's great to have them all in one collection. What would you have to spend to get all these Christmas carols any other way? If you enjoy Christmas carols, I doubt if you'll find a better collection anywhere.

This double CD containing 52 tracks really is what it says it is - the best carols album in the world. I found it very difficult to source a CD with traditional (or "old fashioned") Christmas Carols from the big box retailers in NZ - the nearest I could get was modern artist's interpretation of some traditional carols, and these aren't usually choral works, nor do they feature orchestral accompaniement. They are also usually very limited in their selection of carols.I was looking for a CD version of the Vinyl carols collection that I grew up with as a child - "Fireside Carols" sung by the Bach Choir conducted by David Willcocks - and I couldn't find a copy anywhere (it is much more difficult to find "non-mainstream" recordings such as this in NZ since all the smaller, independent record stores have closed down). I was delighted to find the album in it's entirety on this collection, as well as many other lovely interpretations of some of the other traditional Christmas Carols that I grew up with. Also, as can be expected of a collection this size, there were works that were new to me, but equally as lovely as those old favourites. If you're looking for a particular and/or obscure "old fashioned" Christmas Carol, or a comprehensive collection of traditional Christmas Carols, sung by talented choirs and accompanied by beautiful orchestral scores, look no further than this album - it'll certainly be the only Christmas Carols album you'll ever need to buy.
