Product Description

From Amazon.com

Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the '70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn't be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scored multiple singles hits yet pulled off albums with the best of her contemporaries. This is an early collection, so it misses "Nobody Does It Better" and other later hits. Regardless, nearly all the songs here are worth having. Flavorful and nourishing--and a good package, besides. --Gavin McNett

Early Carly 5 Dec 2004
By Peter Reeve TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
In the early 70s, a blend of jazz/folk/rock emerged on the East Coast of America. Although having folk elements, it was not part of the 60s folk revival and was distinct from both the folk/rock movement in Britain and the "Beatles meets folk" West Coast (Byrds) sound. It was jazzier and more metropolitan in style. Its most famous exponents are Carly Simon and Carole King.

This album presents a good selection of Simon's early 70s work. A more comprehensive collection, spanning her entire career, can be found on 'Anthology'.

If you like Carole King you will probably like Carly Simon, and vice versa. (And you can add the 70s work of Neil Sedaka, King's contemporary and friend, to that list). King appears as part of backing vocals on one track here, 'Attitude Dancing', albeit that is the weakest track on the album. Simon's then husband, James Taylor shares vocals with her on "Mockingbird". Many people find "Mockingbird" altogether too quirky or goofy, but I say it's a masterpiece, and the album's best track by far. Although not penned by her, it is redolent of "Itsy-Bitsy Spider", that she sings over the credits in the movie "Heartburn". If you have not heard it, you should. Taylor also plays guitar on several other tracks.

Carly Simon has a great voice and is a considerable musical talent. Her lyrics lack the poetic depth of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan, and she cannot summon up the soulfulness of Joni Mitchell or Judy Collins, but the total package - singer, songwriter and musician - remains a great and unique pleasure.

By Pieter HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER

Carly Simon was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the seventies. Her songs are literate observations on life, love, relationships and commitment, usually set to addictive melodies. Highlights here include the somewhat sad The Right Thing To Do, the enigmatic You're So Vain, one of her biggest hits and a song which fuelled much speculation as to who it was about, and the plaintive Anticipation. Haven't Got Time For The Pain and No Secrets are memorable too. Attitude Dancing is an interesting experiment and That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be is quite a literate number, questioning convention and tradition. Simon wasn't really a folk singer like then-husband James Taylor and as an observant singer/songwriter she created innovative melodic pop. This is an excellent collection of her early hits.

I know that I could write hundreds of words pertaining to this influential folk-based rock star. Because, however, you're the reader with I'm sure other interests of importance on your mind, I will do my best to keep this review at a proper minimum. A quality in particular that has generated Ms. Simon's dedicated followers is the fact that this music maker has always been honest with her abilities and representation. Never in her works has there been evidence of overwhelming studio influence or unneeded alteration. Every one of her hits radiates a refreshing keynote(s) to sustain any fan's interest. All strong examples of how this incredible singer has never ceased to present her best efforts while at the same time remaining keenly in tune with what her musical criterion in general has to offer.

From every ballad to rock `n roll inspiration, Carly Simon has always had the capacity to give her listening audience what they more or less expect and want to hear. From the simple melodic designs of That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be and Haven't Got Time For The Pain to the never timid thrust components of Anticipation, Mockingbird and You're So Vain, this CD gives basically the best to what her career publicly has had to offer. Although Nobody Does It Better (The Spy Who Loved Me) was not included in this hit series, every singer/songwriter I believe has the right at one time or another to keep the odd favorite to themself. Thank-you Carly for sharing your beautiful music with what today lacking surely could not have been the same!
