Product Description

Review

‎A good core sample [Helen Simpson's analogy for the short story] tells you "everything you need to know about the history and geography and inhabitants and social conditions of the area, in wonderfully concise form." Drawn from writers both famous and unknown, from printed sources, radio and the web, the stories in this collection, more often than not, do just that. (Carol Birch The Times Literary Supplement )

Prepare to be amazed, horrified and delighted! From the quirkiness of Will Self’s iAnna via the surrealism of HP Tinker’s Alice in Time & Space and Various Major Cities and the pure, cinematic light of Stella Duffy’s To Brixton Beach, to Jeanette Winterson’s bold and exquisitely written All I Know About Gertrude Stein, this eclectic anthology encompasses an astonishing variety of style and content, bound together by two book-end pieces, each set in a library. (Susan Haigh The Short Review )

Review

Some pairings can be relied upon – literature and life, Steptoe and Son, Lennon and McCartney, Nicholas Royle and a good anthology. (Andrew O’Hagan )

1.0 out of 5 stars very odd 3 Feb 2013

I like all styles of writing from bios to sci fi but this was very very odd.
There was not one tale I could get my head round.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just about OK 24 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Some of the stories are confusing. I expected a more gripping read after reading it's predecessor. I would probably buy another collection as perhaps the reviews will have given guidance to the types of stories the average reader wants to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The British short story is thriving 1 Nov 2012
By CM
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic collection. I actually couldn't put it down, which is rare for an anthology. Each story creates a world of its own and there are some truly masterful examples of the form. There's a wide range of genres and writers, but the level is universally high. I'm already looking forward to the 2013 collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars great short stories 15 Sep 2012
By dorcas
Format:Paperback
If you enjoy the short story form, you'll love this book. The stories are weird, adventurous, moving and at times hopeful. My favourites - and it's hard to choose - are the first and last stories both dealing with libraries. 'I arrive first ' by Emma Jane Unsworth kept me guessing and AK Benedict's story 'The Last LIbrary' - the last story in the collection - was brilliantly written, deeply involving and engaging. I enjoyed the top and tailing of the collection in this way, too. In between are stories by Stella Duffy, Jeannette Winterson and loads of others - what's not to like?
PS AK Benedict has a novel coming out in February 2012. I can't wait. The Beauty of Murder

What a great collection, a fabulous ensemble of writers & stories. I especially enjoyed Dancing to Nat King Cole by James Wall. He is surely a writer we are going to hear a great deal more from.
