5.0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation! 20 Oct 2005
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan of PiL, Sex Pistols, John Lydon etc. etc. since the Pistols debut. PiL, however, remains a favorite band and I try to get every release.
[A real find was TRIBUTE, the PiL Tribute album. I recommend it!]
This collection (I got the 2 Disc version) is a great compliment to Plastic Box. It has a couple of key Pistols tracks. A good selection of Public Image tracks and some hard to find 12 inch mixes.
I was also very pleased to finally get Time Zone's "World Destruction" on CD. This is a key rap/rock track and I bought the 45 the week it was released!
[I also saw the video for the first time last night on the DVD that is the non-identical twin to this CD set].
If you're a fan of PiL. Get this! Sex Pistols fans completists may want this. John Lydon fans have already ordered it.
My only regret is the lack of liner notes by John himself.
[There are liner notes but it doesn't say who wrote them].

5.0 out of 5 stars A slight nit-pick w/ previous review 30 Sep 2005
Format:Audio CD
I feel I have to correct the previous reviewer about something rather important, at least to lovers, like myself, of the 1st version of PIL: the 12" mix of "Death Disco" WAS issued on cd previously on "Plastic Box", although they had to master it from a 12" vinyl single due to lost master tapes. The real shame here, in my opinion, is that the absolutely best thing PIL Mk1 ever did, the "Memories" 12" version, is still absent.
Why not that one from a clean vinyl copy? Oh well, one of the many reasons I keep my turntable and precious vinyl singles and lps about...
This still appears to be a decent collection for folks who are new to Lydon's work or want a "best of" only. I advise picking up the companion dvd of this release: it's got some GREAT videos on it!

By Jason Parkes #1 HALL OF FAME
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Rotten. The 'Best of British £ notes' compilation represents, in a general way, the fairly great career of John Lydon; this two-disc version is the one to get, for the 12"-version of 'Death Disco/Swan Lake' alone (the 12" mixes Lester Bangs raved over, loving the alternate takes of songs like 'DD' and 'Memories'- all of which were lacking from PIL's 'Plastic Box')
The 20-track main-disc is fairly wonderful, containing three-Pistols standards ('Anarchy in the UK', 'God Save the Queen' & 'Holidays in the Sun') - though the exclusion of a song like 'Pretty Vacant' for late PIL/solo-Lydon mediocrity like 'Sun', 'Don't Ask Me' & 'Cruel' may irk some. Hard to whine though when such joys as 'Public Image', 'This is Not a Love Song', 'The Flowers of Romance', 'Death Disco', 'Rise', 'Home', 'Seattle' & 'The Body' are included! It's fantastic the Afrika Baambaata/Bill Laswell one-off 'World Destruction' by Time Zone is present, having become hard to find and a bit forgotten - it was wonderfully used to conclude an episode of 'The Sopranos' a few years ago. & Lydon's last great moment is here, the Leftfield-collaboration 'Open Up', which is basically the template used for The Prodigy's ubersmash 'Firestarter'!
The second disc is the one for PIL-heads, of which there are more in the wake of post-punk celebration and books like 'Rip It Up and Start Again.' The aforementioned 12"-version of 'Death Disco' is joined by joys such as 'Religion', 'Poptones', 'Careering' & the scary 'Banging the Door' (I'd probably have included 'Home is Where the Heart Is', 'Blue Water' & 'The Order of Death', but the point of the compilation is to try & represent all eras of Lydon!) The latter half of the second-disc is a bit boring, I loathed the dance-mix of 'God Save the Queen', but who can gripe at the wonderful 'Rise' in its 12" glory or the epic full-on version of 'Open Up'? An excellent compilation and a must-have in its two-disc version...
