And I can't understand why something good's gotta die...,

This review is from: Best of Blind Melon (Audio CD)
...Before we miss it!
Blind Melon were an incredibly talented band; every song features a flawless amalgamation of Shannon Hoon's beautifully angelic vocals and incredibly melodic and catchy guitar riffs. The sound of the two combined creates something unusual, original and utterly stunning. This 'Best of...' CD contains the standout tracks from each of Blind Melon's albums; the brilliant, harmony laced 'Mouthful of Cavities,' the lyrically magnificent 'Change,' the glorious tempo changes of 'St. Andrew's Fall' and the beautifully depressive 'Time.' Unfortunately though, 'Deserted;' one of the most outstanding tracks in their back catalogue only appears in a live format and though it still sounds great, it really deserved to be here in its original studio format. The album also includes an unreleased track in 'Three Is The Magic Number.' I would suggest that from their unreleased material 'Mother' would have been a better choice as it is one of their most beautiful songs and deserves to be more accessible than it is. In any case, it is a great selection of tracks in which the music is serene but constantly exciting, the lyrics often genius and the vocals always spectacular. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of music; if unfamiliar with Blind Melon this is probably a good place to start, even though, to this day, the tracks from the first album still largely remain the best collection of Blind Melon songs. To listen to Shannon's captivating and enigmatic voice and know that he is tragically gone, is heartbreaking. However, with this collection of eternally compelling songs, the legacy can continue.

All their hits in one little package,
By J. Verwer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Best of Blind Melon (Audio CD)
If you're interested in Blind Melon but don't want to buy one of their regular albums first, this compilation is just for you. It contains all their hits, and while some great songs are inevitably missing in action, the selection is just excellent. The songs are ordered by album, starting with their self-titled debut album, then moving on to "Soup", then "Nico" (note that "Soup" is both an album and a song on "Nico"), and finally the CD closes with their cover of "Three Is A Magic Number" (and it's great!) and two live version of songs from their first album. Personally, I think the latter two songs feel a little bit out of place here, but I can understand the reason for including them.
A better place for those songs would've been the bonus DVD, which already contains three live songs as well as three song videos. It's a nice disc, but it'll also leave you longing for more, which could cost you money. ;) |
