Fantastic Memphis Power Pop,
This review is from: The Best of Big Star (Audio CD)
I don't quite understand the logic of releasing a "best of" and only using two albums as the source, especially when those two albums are already on a single CD and on the same label. It actually makes a lot more sense when you put the CD in your machine, because as soon as September Gurls kicks in the world's a better place - it's like being 18 again and the summer lasts forever. If you've never heard Big Star before then it's quite possible that you'll play this CD and, quite justifiably, feel that you've discovered the best album in the world ever - it's that good. Big Star was the result of a blue eyed soul boy (Alex Chilton) getting it together with a Beatles fanatic (Chris Bell) and the upshot was two stunning albums of Memphis power pop. This 14 track collection divides itself equally from the two original albums, taking only the best, and provides an excellent introduction to the band, though the original 2on1 CD is equally impressive. It's up to you in the end, just make sure you own one of them.

A far from complete best of...,
By Jason Parkes "We're all Frankies'" (Worcester, UK) - See all my reviews (No. 1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Best of Big Star (Audio CD)
The best thing about this compilation is the price- it serves as a sampler, a taste of the first two BS LP's...But once you get a taste you'll at very least want the three studio albums (#1 Record, Radio City, Third/Sister Lovers). As this only features tracks from the first two- both of which are collected on a single CD for a few more ££££'s- it is far from complete...There are no out-takes (E.g. 'Downs', 'Til the end of the Day', 'The Letter') or any live-songs (from either the couple of 70's live LPs or the 1993 reform with The Posies). And criminally there is NOTHING from the dark classic 'Third/Sister Lovers'- which overlooks gems like 'Thank You Friends', 'Night Time' and 'Jesus Christ'(which have as much melody as any tracks of the first two records). It might also have been pertinent to include The Box Top's 'The Letter'- to suggest a prologue- or the collaborations with ex-member Chris Bell: (who died before these fruits would be released)'You & Your Sister' and 'I am the Cosmos'...So, a lazy compilation which is not bad value, packed full of great songs such as the everenchanting 'September Gurls' or the Kinksian thrash of 'Don't lie to me'...Better off with the '#1 record'/'Radio City' double-set and tracking down the reissue of 'Sister Lovers'...One of the greatest guitar bands ever? Of course...

Great Music, no need,

This review is from: The Best of Big Star (Audio CD)
I got given this CD as my introduction to Big Star, and although I absolutely loved it and have since become somewhat of obsessive fan, I have to say there's no need to own this "best of". For the same price you can buy both #1 record and Radio city on one disc and hear all these tracks and more on the albums as they were intended.
So for the music 5 star, but this product is unecessary.
