Book Description

5 July 2012 Outcast Chronicles
Sorne, the estranged son of a King on the verge of madness, is being raised as a weapon to wield against the mystical Wyrds. Half a continent away, his father is planning to lay siege to the Celestial City, the home of the T En, whose wyrd blood the mundane population have come to despise. Within the City, Imoshen, the only mystic to be raised by men, is desperately trying to hold her people together. A generations long feud between the men of the Brotherhoods and the women of the sacred Sisterhoods is about to come to a head. With war without and war within, can an entire race survive the hatred of a nation? Rowena Cory Daniells, the creator of the bestselling Chronicles of King Rolen s Kin, brings you a stunning new fantasy epic, steeped in magic and forged in war.

''Well-drawn characters, a ruthless streak to the plotting... the tantalising prospect of broad, sweeping change in the future, rather than the rightful king status quo so familiar in fantasy.'' --SFX Magazine

4.0 out of 5 stars A rich and complex world 16 July 2012
Format:Paperback
If you enjoy stories laced with political scheming, you'll love Besieged. The world of The Outcast Chronicles contains two races, the true-men or Mieren and the T'En or Wyrds. There are many more true-men than T'En, mostly because the latter rarely breed true. Instead they bear the half-blood Malaunje, marked by mulberry eyes and six fingers and toes and copper hair. The T'En possess powerful mental gifts and the ability to interact with the empyrean plane and if necessary to battle its horrific monsters. These abilities, their difference in appearance and their longevity, the T'En are both feared and despised by the true-men and have largely retreated to their island stronghold called the Celestial City. Enough fodder for conflict there to start from. But Daniells doesn't leave it at that; there is trouble afoot in the true-men kingdoms as King Charald of Chalcedonia, a disturbed and cruel despot, sets out to conquer the world and create an empire. In addition, there is unrest in T'En society, a society split in Brotherhoods and Sisterhoods, where children have to be given up to the Sisterhoods to raise and only the boys are returned to the Brotherhoods after seventeen years. This division is due to the differences between the male and the female gifts, which can only clash or bind, unless they are rigidly suppressed and adult T'En avoid each other. At least, that is what the T'En believe to be the reason for the covenant, which regulates their lives. Everything in T'En society is about gaining stature, both individually and for the clan-like Brother- and Sisterhoods, which leads to scheming, conspiracy and violence.

To carry off all the politicking you need strong characters, who can lead the reader through the maze of differing sides and keep the storylines straight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read 4 Feb 2013

Great read, part of a fantastic trilogy, initially a slow start but defiantly worth the small amount of leg work at the beginning as it is a deep book with great undercurrents recommend for anyone who likes a sort of realistic fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Trilogy... 10 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved this first book and recommend the trilogy to everyone. But I did find that the end has been left open, so there may be more to come. This first book is fantastic though.

As a fan of the King Rolen Kin books I was well up for reading this trilogy, for me it was a hard start but once invested it was well worth it, the book has lot of characters which to begin with I didn't know who I was suppose to rooting for. The T'en are an interesting race with many secrets which you learn along the way.

The artwork is amazing even my girlfriend was impressed by it. im currently near the end of the 2nd book and can not wait for the 3rd book to come out.

Its well worth the purchase so don't be shy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow starter 21 July 2012
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
Rowena is one of those authors who created a world that as a reader I want to get lost in. Whilst this tale moves on from the King Rolen's Kin series, this one hits back with a society war that is not only thought provoking but one that brings lot of politicking alongside questioning by the reader as it wends it way.

Whilst this is a little of a slow starter, it is one that allows you to get to grips with the current situation through the eyes of the key protagonists. Its wonderfully written, the prose sharp and with the dialogue engaging the reader it's a solid starter for a new series. But with it being a slow burner, I'm going to wait until the second book in the series before passing judgement as to be honest this one is mainly the set up for the series.
